What's next for social networking?

- Charles Dalluay -

MANILA, Philippines – Expect the social networking phenomenon to leave the confines of the personal computer.

It’s all about going mobile — and this time, it’s going to give you the chance to send round-the-clock updates about everything from your latest vacation or how your day went — basically logging on, and never logging off again.

The new web portal, Sandbox, redefines the concept of social networking by giving you the freedom to share the nuances of your life on mobile in the same way you have become accustomed to doing on your laptop or desktop.

“The key to Sandbox is being able to work your social network while you’re on the go, responding to messages, uploading photos and videos while you’re on the go,” shares Jayvee Fernandez of www.abuggedlife.com. “So whether you’re sitting in front of your computer or commuting to work, you can keep yourself connected to the same social platform. Essentially, you’re online 24/7.”

The term “Social Networking” has become a huge buzzphrase in recent years since sites like Friendster, MySpace and Facebook marched into the World Wide Web — but with the arrival of Sandbox ushers in a sense of digital harmony that brings all the facets of your digital life together, on the web, or on the go.

Specifically designed for local and global Filipinos, the site is the first Filipino-developed online social network. Unlike existing networking sites, which are still largely used on personal computers, this new web and mobile-oriented social network brings the burgeoning culture of online networking to more personal level by giving you constant access to your network through your cellphone.

“A lot of people want to be connected to their friends at all time,” Annie Naval, group head for marketing of Smart’s Communication, said. “They can’t do that when they turn the computer off. It’s all about digital harmony — bringing the different elements of your digital life together.”

For Sandbox — with its various facets like blogging, video, music and photo sharing, just to name a few — social networking has become a form of self-expression. And offering it all on mobile as well means you can expect social networking to go to new heights.
