Clash of the idols

- J. Vincent Sarabia Ong -

MANILA, Philippines - I have to admit I have a boy crush on David Archuleta and got his album free on i-Tunes because his rabid fans emailed me digital cash. Yet, I have something more revealing to say as an Archie. It has been a year and I had to admit it but David Cook is still the winner. After watching this season, Cook has left a musical mark on Idol and we fans are all the better for it. It ain’t a singing competition no more. It is an artist competition. You can still belt it out and Adam freakishly sure did but rearranging its where it is at. This is why we have Adam Lambert (Feeling Good = Feeling the Finals) and Kris Allen (Heartless = Priceless) in the finals. America finally put the Go in Gokey as EW.com would say and next week will definitely be a show.

Yet, the show ain’t over till the Glambert and Sexy Face bathe in Kodak’s blue spotlight and Ryan keeps on stalling till they are on the verge of peeing in their pants or leather pants for Adam. To keep things fair in a musical world where fan bases are clearly biased, let’s see who has got the musical score to win the record deal that we will be all lining up or pirating from friends this December.

Adam Lambert

Unlike previous seasons, this year had to grown on me. I think particularly Adam did because he sounded more drag queen rather than rock king in the beginning, especially with country week. Then, he did a mad rendition of Mad World that’s practically cheating because the 80s were gay anyway (but I’m not implying he is because Idol or TMZ isn’t revealing it). In Rat Pack week, he did Feeling Good with a note that I thought killed cancer cells with its intensity. Yet, I couldn’t help but listen to it more like a freak show. I got Glamberted after he did rock week sounded like Robert Plant and gave me a fun song to sing in traffic Slow Ride.

Verdict: Yeah, he’ll win. Every week has been Adam Lambert and friends so far. He only lose if he shaves his hair for shock value.

Kris Allen

Kris was always the guy who I didn’t expect to be good till he performed. Every week, I would say “this Kris guy is really good” and forget about him by Friday. Then, he did Falling Slowly and I suddenly could remember him till next Wednesday’s show. Like Cook, he does his thing but less gruff and more Jack Johnson vibe. My bias for Allen was based more on taking away Gokey till he sang Heartless last Wednesday and magically turned it into something humbling and simple, who knew that you could do that with Kanye West?

Verdict: He could win, too. It is just a matter of how risky his song choice and arrangement can be. He might go too far but I think he won’t like Gokey did with Dream On (Dream On Gokey that you can sing like Adam).

David Archuleta

Archuleta closed the door for Idol as a singing competition with his pure voice and now has smoothly transitioned to pop world. He is steeped in the tween universe after appearing in ICarly, Hanna Montana, and his next stop is to be with Demi Lovato’s tour. He even wrote a song for the Build A Bear foundation. How sweetly tween can you get? His music is embarrassing to listen to but you can’t deny but listen. I’m waiting till he grows up and record producers allow him to sing the John Mayer-esque song that he promised on his debut.

David Cook

I’ll get stones thrown into my Cookies but yeah, he is doing great and selling albums. I don’t listen to him much because his late 90s vibe isn’t my genre. Yet, I can’t deny we won’t have Adam or Kris doing such risks without David Cook. He changed the game of Idol with Always Be My Baby. I’ll forever be grateful for him making this season phenomenal. A bit of trivia, Cook was a theatre junkie, too. So, if Adam wins, he won’t be the first from the stage to win. Also, Cook proves that not all Broadway people are gay so Adam might not be?? (More stones thrown from Glambert camp).
