How do you edit your closet?

WORDS WORTH - Mons Romulo - The Philippine Star

We’ve all been through this — a closet or a house full of things we don’t need and there’s no room to breathe or to add anything new. De-cluttering is an exercise in discipline, but it’s a hard one for many when it comes to their closets. Here’s how some personalities do it.

Emmeline Aglipay-Villar, DIWA party list representative

My clothes are grouped according to whether they are formal, semi-formal, cocktail, business or casual. Each grouping is divided into dresses, jumpsuits, bottoms or tops and further divided by color. Dresses are divided according to length.

Carla Mc Kowen, entrepreneur

I currently utilize two rooms which I separate into summer and winter wear. The summer room is adjacent to the bedroom. The winter room is a smaller storage area a floor below which I turned into a walk-in wardrobe.

Councilor Lala Sotto-Antonio, Quezon City

Every so often, I edit by identifying clothes I don’t need anymore and give them to my staff. The clothes have to be seen in order to know that you have them, while the others are folded neatly.

Divine Lee-Go, entrepreneur, blogger

I was recently obsessing over Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up author Marie Kondo’s books. It’s a nice way to start organizing the closet/house because it digs deeper. There’s a different sense of peace in an organized home/closet.

Mond Gutierrez, TV host

Recently my whole wardrobe had to go through an overhaul because I’ve had to buy new sizes for everything! Losing weight forced me to change up my wardrobe and make it more organized.

Yen Santos, actress

Every New Year, I try to organize my closet.  I categorize clothes into these major sections: dresses, tops, bottoms, outerwear, underwear and accessories. There are instances where one section overflows to another section and that would be a sign that I need to let go of some of them.

Michelle C. Barrera, equestrienne

Being an equestrienne, my closet predominantly consists of T-shirts, jeans, and breeches (riding pants).  That takes up the main part of my closet, then I have other clothing items arranged around that.

Michelle Asense Fontalera, entrepreneur

I fix my closet by organizing my tops, bottoms (skirts, pants, jeans, shorts) and dresses together. When I hang them in my closet, I also organize them by color so that I won’t get confused when I have to look for something.

Sam Que Rodriguez, country manager, GuavaPass; model, host

Funny that this question popped up now since I’m currently in the middle of cleaning out and filtering my closet! I’ve realized through my ongoing purge that quality materials really do withstand the test of time and repeated washing.  I also love recycling outfits from my mom and grandmother. I recently wore a beautiful ruffled skirt that’s from the ‘80s!

Richie Ortega Torres, fashion designer

I learned to let go of items I have not used for five years, and whatever I love, I keep wearing until it dies a natural death. I think my husband’s minimalist philosophy rubbed off on me, he can live out of a suitcase if need be.

Enzo Pineda, actor/entrepreneur

My personal preference is arranging my clothes according to category and color. With my kind of work I make sure everything is organized because I’m always on the go.
