Beyond the Box talks back with Everywhere We Shoot!

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Beyond the Box, a premium tech reseller, recognizes that even the simplest technological devices can change its user’s life. Seeking to create an out-of-the-box after-purchase experience for its customers, Beyond the Box has created a series of talks that aim to be both inspiring and informative: The Box Talks.

The Box Talks features artists who share the stories and inspirations behind their work, as well as a tech-savvy member from the Beyond the Box Staff who simplifies the complex, by providing an easy tutorial on the innovative ways for using the devices.

Recently held at the Le Petit Souffle restaurant at Century City mall, Beyond the Box launched the much-awaited first installment of The Box Talks, which featured the internationally recognized photography and design tandem Ryan Vergara and Garovs Garovillo of Everywhere We Shoot!

As partners in art and in life, the two have made a name for themselves in the art and fashion industries as artists who have a penchant for capturing the quirks of ordinary life and providing unconventional ways to appreciate the world.

The Box Talks attendees received an introduction on unusual concepts like “anti-beauty,” through the duo’s insistence on refusing to photoshop the subjects of their work and merging seemingly unrelated concepts such as food and trash.

Choosing to set the standard instead of follow it, Ryan and Garovs may be considered the original hipsters, but ones who have certainly managed to stay relevant. They shared that technology has changed a lot of their work. For example, what once required a very specific type of film and lighting can now easily be constructed through applications like VSCO or Snapseed. Inarguably a sign of progress, it does make distinguishing oneself as an artist much more challenging. Their advice? “Refrain from copying. If you already see it in the magazines, then tell yourself that it is out of the question. Always dare to be different and that will set you apart.”

After the talk, attendees were challenged to pair up and spend 10 minutes walking around the mall to find something to photograph. They were then required to edit the photo only using the iPhoto editing features on the iPad. The challenge was to capture something “beyond the box” and winners  were promised P3,000 worth of gift certificates from the store.

Kar Abola and Yuki Tansengco were happy to receive just that, after taking an aerial shot of a nearby village, and what appeared to be stained glass on a window.

Beyond the Box also gave a tutorial on the photo editing features of the iPhoto application at their Century City mall branch. Attendees were given a tour of its sleek interiors and were able to view its unique selection of premium devices and stylish accessories available.  They were then taught numerous tips on maximizing the use of their iPads for photography. They learned how to brighten their photos, incorporate filters, re-angle and resize just as they would through third party applications, all without needing to shell out extra cash.
