A Nanay Ramos bio?

ASK NANAY - Socorro C. Ramos -

Dear Nanay,

My name is Ricky and I am fond of reading books and magazines. Books like history, autobiography and current events. Magazines like Yes!, People Asia, Asia Dragon, Biz News, Slum and Sports magazines. I always buy those things at your bookstore and Powerbooks. What I am suggesting is why don’t you publish a series of biographies — about yourself and some of the most popular good politicians, lawyers and outstanding people — so that our next generation know and remember them?

I also read your column in the Philippine STAR and I am so proud of you at your age; you are still giving good advice to some of the letter senders. I believe even a person out of school, if given the interest to know how to read and appreciate books, will someday be a good reader too and not all children who go to school are interested in reading books.    Ricky

Dear Ricky,

Thank you for your kind words.

Doing a series of books on inspirational individuals is a good idea! There are actually a number of biographies available about the lives of business and political leaders and how they have pursued their dreams and cemented their legacies. There are also other books that are actually compilations of short biographies of similarly inspiring people. And don’t forget, in addition to the biographies about Filipinos, there are so many others that are published internationally which talk about the lives of great people who live in other countries. Even if they are foreigners and live abroad, many of their principles and learnings are easily applicable to us who live here in the Philippines.

I also wholeheartedly agree with what you said that learning and loving to read are not just learned in the classroom. Anyone can do it! Just like everything else, all it takes is a little practice. Reading is a joy that is being threatened by other forms of entertainment that provide “instant gratification.” I hope that your words will inspire others to pick up a good book and discover the unparalleled joys of reading.

Sincerely,

Nanay

How do i get an international credit card?

Dear Nanay,

It’s my first time to send you a message though I have read some of your articles every Sunday in the Philippine STAR. I’d like to know which “legitimate websites” offer extra income opportunity online especially for Pinoys.

I receive my salary once a month, and it’s not enough for me to depend on it, knowing the economic situation we have in the country. Besides, my girlfriend and I are planning to settle down sometime early or mid-quarter next year.

I’d like to take this opportunity as well to know which bank offers an international credit card. I visited some websites before but I was disappointed because they usually ask if I already have an international credit card, which I don’t yet.                       Ruel

Dear Ruel,

First of all, congratulations on your approaching wedding!

From the feedback we received from some letter senders before, you should be wary of websites that ask for your credit card information or charge you fees upfront before offering you a job. There are many websites out there that are just trying to make money from you. Linoloko ka lang nila (they are fooling you)! Legitimate websites that are really looking for potential employees will not charge you upfront fees. So be careful!

With regards to international credit cards, all the major banks that offer credit cards services offer an international credit card. My suggestion would be to go to a branch of any of the major banks and just ask them how to get a credit card. Usually it is as simple as filling out an application form and giving some support documents. Just make sure you specify to them that you want an “international” card.

Good luck!

Sincerely,

Nanay
