A night of music with Ateneo de Zamboanga University
MANILA, Philippines - Music lovers will be treated to a night of easy listening to well-loved classics and current pop tunes as the Ateneo de Zamboanga University (ADZU) Concert Band stages “Stint,” a concert for a cause, on June 11, Friday at the Henry Lee Irwin Theater, Ateneo de Manila University, Loyola Heights, Quezon City.
Classics such as Soaring with John Williams (arranged by Robert W. Smith), Matt Conway’s Pursuit, James Swearingen’s Flight of Valor, Karl Jenkins’ Palladio, Young Blood Brass Band’s Brooklyn, and themes from movies such as Lord of the Rings (Howard Shore) and Pirates of the Caribbean : At World’s End (Hans Zimmer) are some performances to look forward to from Western Mindanao’s 50-member music gem.
Spicing up ADZU Concert Band’s repertoire is its rendition of Gioachinno Antonio Rossini’s William Tell Overture; Maestro Lucio San Pedro’s Lahing Kayumanggi; and Harold L. Walters Trumpet’s Wild for the gala performance; and John Higgins’ arrangement of Hollywood Milestones; Swing-out Sisters’ Breakout and James Swearingen’s The Light Eternal for the matinee performance.
The concert heralds the celebration of ADZU’s centennial in 2012. It also marks the sesquicentennial of the return of the Jesuits to the Philippines.
The Ateneo de Zamboanga Concert Band has been making great music since 1932 and is one of the most enduring in the country. The band started as a marching and pep band until its director Apolonio G. Enriquez transformed the group into a concert band in 1991. Enriquez, an ADZU alumnus, is a choir director, arranger, conductor and brass teacher who spent his formative years in music as a member of that same band during his high school and college days.
The band has since won the Zamboanga Brass Band competition three times — in 2001, 2002 and 2008 — besting all other bands in the city, including military bands such as Southcom and PAF, which have traditionally dominated such contests. Of the 50 members, 24 are in college, 20 in high school and six in grade school, most of them scholars. Each plays a variety of instruments such as the flute, trumpet, clarinet, French horn, trombones, alto sax, tenor sax, tuba, baritone sax, percussion, and keyboard.
Proceeds of the concert will go to the ADZU Scholarship Campaign for the university’s centennial in 2012 and to the Ateneo de Manila’s University Dormitory Scholarships.
The concert will be held on June 11, at the Henry Lee Irwin Theater. The matinee show at 3:30 p.m. will feature the Ateneo Grade School Boys Choir as guest while the evening show at 7:30 p.m. will have a performance by Henri Ocier.
