MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine STAR, National Book Store and Globe Telecom have chosen winners for My Favorite Book 2009 contest.

Grand prize: Joel E. Abelinde, who wrote the essay “My Mother, Raskolnikov and I”

Second prize: Emerson Bengco, “Up Close with ‘Personal’”

Third prize: Manuel Garcia Calleja, “Writing: A business both Serious and Joyful”

Five honorable-mention winners:

Jillian Joyce Ong Tan, “A Classic Dysfunctional Family”

Madeline Romero, “Literature and Democratic Spaces”

Fulton Acosta, “Taking the fourth”
