Support a scholar, buy a Sesquicentennial Swatch
MANILA, Philippines - In celebrating 150 years of academic excellence, spirituality, and nation building, Ateneo De Manila University has targeted 500 new scholars by the end of this year. The fund-raising project, 500@150 Ateneo Sesquicentennial Scholarship Fund Campaign, has as its theme, “Building an Atenean is Building a Nation.”
The new scholarships will provide a more enduring dimension to the Ateneo Sesquicentennial, as well as spread the efforts of making Ateneo education as accessible to as wide a segment of Filipino youth as possible.
Fr. Nemesio Que, SJ director, Ateneo De Manila University, sent a letter of thanks to Virgie Ramos, Gift Gate president, for the P1 million donation of Swatch to the Ateneo scholarship fund.
In the letter, Fr. Que quoted a portion of the homily delivered by Fr. Jose Magadia, SJ on June 14:
“As we move towards the frightening future, in a Philippines that continues to be pained by poverty and inequality and injustice, where Filipinos are left with little choice but to leave the country for lack of a more stable future at home, where we remain bothered by a politics that is so mired and stained by corruption . . . we should offer missionaries . . . new bearers of the fire, new heralds of the good news . . . The new missionaries are you, our alumni and friends, who share our spirituality, who go forth in business and family life and parishes and NGOs and movements, for it is there that you must call special attention to the subtle yet penetrating presence of God.”
The Ateneo Sesquicentennial Swatch is a special edition watch designed by Ateneo student Jason Patrick Nallas. The Swatch was inspired by the recognizable blue eagle, the design is at once very Ateneo and very current. The sales of the Swatch will go to the Ateneo scholarship fund.
Recently, the Ateneo Blue Eagles, UAAP season 72 back-to-back champions, proudly wore their school spirit on their wrists.
