Oktoberfest: A time for fun and family
MANILA, Philippines - In keeping with the traditional Oktoberfest activities, Mandarin Oriental, Manila and the German Club of Manila once again recreate the revelry and splendor of a centuries-old Bavarian tradition. It is being true to the custom of the world’s biggest outdoor festival that after the two nights of unbridled gaiety and beer-drinking on Oct. 16 and 17 at the NBC Tent in Bonifacio Global City, the “beer tent” transforms into a virtual carnival for children and their parents on Oct. 18 at 10:30 a.m., so that children of all ages also have their time of day.
On this Sunday morning, the Günther Friedmann Band, a brass band flying in from Germany for the three days of merrymaking, performs lighthearted music to appeal to the cross-section of its audience who are also feted with ample buffet, games and activities for the whole family — including a puppet show, a magician, a caricaturist, a kiddie beauty salon, a yoyo artist, a balloon artist, a bouncy castle and playground, and a football “arena” from Puma. Unlimited food, and a freuschoppen, or morning beer, are also the added attractions during this mid-day Oktoberfest celebration.
The three-day Oktoberfest celebration is presented with the support of Lufthansa German Airlines, Swiss International Airlines, Lufthansa Technik, Lifestyle Network, Philippine Star, San Miguel, the NBC Tent, Puma, LR Health and Beauty Systems, M/Y Christian Andersen, Asia Management Systems and Bosch.
The huge space at the NBC Tent provides ample room to romp around, hop from one activity booth to another, and even do “the chicken dance” with their parents to the folksy music of the nine-piece brass band, on Sunday; and plenty of room for beer lovers and Oktoberfest enthusiasts to dance and toast the night away on Friday and Saturday.
The Oktoberfest celebrations on Oct. 16 and 17 start at 6 p.m. and are marked with beer-drinking and yodeling competitions for male and female guests, respectively; the selection of a Miss Oktoberfest, and the chance to win prize trips to Munich on business class via Lufthansa and Swiss Airlines, and other exciting prizes in a fund-raising raffle organized by the German Club. On these nights, there is no limit to beer and feasting on Bavarian spread of sausages, pig’s knuckles, salads, desserts and other specialties, as revelers bring home an Oktoberfest mug as a memento.
Tickets to the Family Oktoberfest are at P1,100, inclusive of unlimited food and beer. Children under 12 years accompanied by an adult are free of charge. Tickets to the evening events are at P2,350 with special prices offered for purchase of 24 or more tickets.
