Globe launches cell phone recycling program

-

MANILA, Philippines – In an effort to protect the environment, Globe recently launched its cell phone recycling program encouraging the public to recycle or donate their old cell phones, PDAs, chargers and batteries at designated recycling bins located at Ayala Malls and soon in major Globe business centers.

Globe’s Cell phone Recycling Program primarily aims to educate people about the potential harm that cell phones can have on our environment. Cell phones have parts that are toxic when released to the environment like circuit boards which contain components like arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury; and plastic parts that sometimes contain brominated flame retardant. Currently there are approximately 55.8 million Filipinos who own a cell phone and this number is growing enormously. The soaring number of cell phone users in the country and the shorter replacement cycle of cell phone use (around 18 months) are factors that have made their disposal a growing concern.

To kick off the program, a ceremonial turnover of recycling bins and information boards to program partner Ayala Malls was recently held at the Atrium of Glorietta 5 in Makati City.
