What’s your fave TV show?

Television is a very powerful medium. It’s a part of our life as it entertains, relaxes and informs us on almost everything and anything we want to know. To a lot of us it is hard to think what life would be without TV, which keeps us company even in the most private places – such as our bedrooms. This is why it is very important to choose what we –and particularly our children – are watching.

Here are some personalities willing to share with us their favorite TV shows.

DEAN BARBERS, general manager, Philippine Tourism Authority: I love competitive sports, like basketball, golf and even poker and enjoy watching shows on them. But I love watching the late Steve Irwin’s show The Crocodile Hunter. My children and I watch it all the time because we share a fascination with land and marine life. We were deeply saddened by Steve Irwin’s passing. It’s a tragic loss.

MELVIN MOJICA, fashion director: I watch Let’s Go! whenever I’m free to watch TV. Dennis is the first gay character on Philippine television who realistically looks like a normal gay teenager sans scarf and flowers. I heart Timmy Boy.

BUBBLES PARAISO, model: Entourage because it’s entertaining, plus the guys are funny; Desperate Housewives, the story is cute and I love the twists; the O.C. – I love the story, it’s so intriguing. Smallville – Superman’s history, Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum… three reasons to love it ; and Prisonbreak, aside from the fact that Wentworth Miller is a hottie, I love it because of the surprise twists of the story, and how super brilliant Scofield is.

ROBERT LILLES, architect: My favorite TV show is House. Everything about the series is unorthodox so it is always unpredictable, unconventionally humorous and highly entertaining. The eccentric character of Dr. House is an enigma in itself. He is able to diagnose just by looking at the patient. At my age, I appreciate all the medical information the show gives on different illnesses. Plus, Sela Ward is in it.

JIGGER ANTONIO, managing director, Century Properties: My favorite TV show is Boston Legal. It airs every Tuesday in the US and it is currently in its third season. It’s about a group of lawyers in the Boston area. I love it because the writing is refreshingly intelligent, witty and funny. Characters are well developed and very likeable. Each episode tackles contemporary legal issues, albeit in an over-dramatized, sometimes exaggerated, but always entertaining way.

LEN NEPUMUCENO GUIAO, fashion designer: I love watching Oprah and CSI. I just love Oprah and the way she reaches out to people and interviews her guests, plus shares her very expensive favorite things to her studio audience; CSI because I’m really amazed by the way they solve crimes with very detailed explanations.

JJ PONCE GONZALEZ, councilor, Baliwag, Bulacan: Deal or No Deal. It is very exciting! The show is very entertaining, even mind-boggling. I like it also because Kris Aquino handles the hostess role deftly. Another favorite of mine is On Foot (on the Living Asia channel). I enjoy watching it because it’s very educational and informative. It gives us insights into various great places to see.

CLAUDE TAYAG artist-chef: My favorite is Monk. What I love about detective Monk is that he’s so funny without trying. His having an OC (obsessive compulsive) disorder strikes a strong chord in every one of us. I see a lot of his antics in our everyday interactions with other people – like drinking from another person’s glass or biting from the same sandwich, whether family or, more so, a stranger; touching (accidentally or otherwise) another person’s skin, especially when it’s sweaty (yuck!); being unable to hold a toilet door knob after you’ve just washed your hands. Alcogel, anyone?

CARISSA CRUZ-EVANGELISTA, DTI undersecretary for regional operations and National One Town One Product program manager: I often watch shows on the Discovery Channel. I love shows that explain to me how things are made or how technology was used to solve a problem. I also like watching Oprah, Private Conversations with Boy Abunda and Straight Talk with Cito Beltran because I find the lives of other people interesting. I learn from insights of people as they go through life and their experiences. For the morning news, I watch Teledyaryo, Allan Allanigues’ Serbisyo Muna and The Morning Show with Veronica Baluyot-Jimenez of Channel 4; TV Patrol as well as the news shows of most of the channels when I have the chance, as I need to know what is going on in the country and how it affects my work and the work of my DTI regional and Provincial directors in bringing business and business services to the regions. Of course, there is always my interest in The Buzz, S-Files, and ETC Channel for showbiz news. Living life is interesting but it’s another story how that same life is reflected and understood on TV.

CRISTAL BAGASTING, Manila’s Five Loveliest, relationships manager for VIP, PLDT: My favorite foreign TV show is Oprah because she always has the best guests and her interviews are very candid and you learn something new after watching each show. Among the local shows, I like watching Y Speak Now, a show centered on issues the youth are facing nowadays. It’s very interesting to watch because you get to know what the youth have to say about the topics given, like politics, friendships, etc. Plus it’s also nice to listen as Fr. Caluag gives advice on and insights into the issues as he closes the show.
