L’Artisan Parfumeur: Scents of smell

CHUVANNESS - CHUVANNESS By Cecile Van Straten -
While most folks are happy with mainstream goods or mall items, some of us are not and seek to find the rarest or only the best of whatever it is we are obsessing about.

My dad is always looking for some obscure chocolate he has never tasted, while I’m excited to discover unknown designers who specialize in one-offs. Some people obsess over handbags – the harder to get the better. Some follow indie or art films or collect very rare music. And then there are people born with special noses who crave very unique scents. They feel incomplete without perfume and seek that signature or trademark scent that is personal to them.

Lucky for those, Rustan’s now offers the famous L’Artisan Parfumeur imported from France. A cult name among fragrance connoisseurs, L’Artisan Parfumeur has produced some of the most exquisite fragrances since 1976.

Their eaux de toilette, scented candles and home fragrances are described as "the very essence of luxury." Staying away from trends, L’Artisan Parfumeur is inspired by the wonders of nature, blending only first-class ingredients.

"We are a niche brand, and we deliberately chose to be different from the rest of the market," said Marie Dumont, CEO of L’Artisan.

L’Artisan is very well known in France and has attracted a following of celebrity clients, like Heather Graham who uses Mûre et Musc, a blackberry and musk mixture that has "never ceased to cast its spell on women." They say those who have chosen it are so attached and faithful to its scent that it has remained one of L’Artisan’s all-time greats. Other brands have tried to imitate it, but none have succeeded.

Isabelle Adjani likes the scented candles made from the best essences and raw materials. Premier Figuier is the most popular, used by Madonna, Brooke Shields, and Halle Berry. This award-winning fragrance combines the scents of fig leaf, milk of almond, sandalwood and coconut.

Madonna also likes Mûre et Musc Extrême, a natural spray of blackberry and musk extreme. This is a stronger, more intense and daring version of Mûre et Musc. Wear it all day long, from first thing in the morning until late at night, for those special evenings.

Michelle Pfeiffer likes Vanilia (Vanilla) eau de toilette, a L’Artisan classic that blends vanilla flower with the more familiar bean and a hint of amber to create a rich fragrance with warmth and depth. It is sophisticated and slightly spicy, not sugary, unlike most vanilla scents on the market.

Mischa Barton likes the amber ball, a handcrafted work of art that adds beauty and a subtle fragrance to the home. Carved and chiseled by a potter, the terracotta Amber Pebble contains an exclusive solid fragrance releasing the rich fragrance of amber. The fragrance is carried through the air and is intensified by heat or humidity in the room. It will slowly waft through the air over a long period.

Sofia Coppola uses Bois Farine, a natural spray of "Wood Flour." Bois Farine is a single and unique fragrance, a magical combination of witch wood and flower powder, from a tree specific to Reunion Island and its red flower smells like flour.

Vanessa Paradis (Johnny Depp’s significant other) uses L’eau d’Ambre, a room spray of amber, a mystical ingredient used in perfume making for many, many years. Use it to give visitors a warm, comfortable welcome at home.
