What’s your favorite sermon from your mom?

WORDS WORTH - Mons Romulo -
Let me first greet my Mom and all the mothers out there a Happy Mother’s Day. There is no one I know who has never been given advice by his or her mother. The sermon from mom that we hated to listen to when we were younger but had no choice but to listen. Now that I am a mother myself I have learned to appreciate the words of wisdom my Mom shared with me as I was growing up. I always try to make sure that I give my kids some words of advice as they are growing up with the hope that when they are older they will remember what I said to them and how much I love them.

KAREL MARQUEZ, TV personality:
"Don’t go out with men who will hurt you, protect yourself and always use your head and yes guys may like you, but get to know what he really is like and make sure that he is not just any Tom, Dick or Harry." I love Mom so much, she’s funny, she’s the best.

NICOLE M. ORTEGA, financial adviser/homemaker
: My mom (Maripi Muscat) and I are the best of friends. She has taught me so many lessons in life and I cannot just point out just one. Early on, she planted the seed of being a God-fearing person. I may not have always applied it, but now that I am a maturing Christian, I realize it is largely because of my Mom’s influence. One of her many sermons that has been permanently ingrained in me is to always exhibit grace, compassion, being non-judgemental and to do away with all negative conversations especially during mealtimes.

RICKY DELGADO, businessman: My Mom always told me that striving to be a person was the best way to be truly happy. Very true.

DAPHNE OSEña PAEZ, TV host, F:
Mom always said that I could do anything that I want and achieve it all if I work hard and set my heart on my goals. She also always told me to count my blessings.

TINA TINIO, marketing lady:
My Mom, (Mary Ann Tinio) is truly the best mother that any daughter could have been blessed with. She is the most giving, selfless and supportive mother in the world and I can’t imagine how I would have turned out without her sharing every important moment of my life with me. The one sermon she used to give this: "People/friends will always come and go in your life, but never forget that your family will always stick by you no matter what. Don’t take them for granted and treasure every moment you have with them." I consider myself so lucky to have a Mom like her. I want to be just like her when I have kids.

PHILIP CUAZON, businessman:
"Save, save, save, it is not Christmas every day. You should spend wisely and always have savings for the rainy days." She still tells me that up to now.

RUTHY C. VERA, investment banker, CLSA Exchange Capital
: Mom (Viola V. Cruz) has instilled in me certain values and has molded me to become the woman that I am today. She would never let any opportunity to teach me things pass.

The one thing that she would tell me over and over again is, "When things are tough, when you are faced with a difficult situation, turn to God and you will never go wrong."

I have dealt with a lot of challenges in my life and I can conclude that I draw strength from prayers. I was told early on in life that I should have inner strength and I believe that can only be achieved if I turn to God. "Let go and let God" that is what I always hear my Mom say – and she is right.
