The highly anticipated World Mathematics Competition 2004 is now opening its doors to mathematically gifted Filipino students. To be held in Bangkok, Thailand in March next year, it is organized by Sakamoto Educational Systems in Singapore and Sakamoto Seminar in Japan. The World Math Competition will be preceded by a Sakamoto National Math Competition to be held in various countries. In the Philippines, the sponsor of the National Math Competition is PACES-Sakamoto Philippines.
This World Math Competition is an annual event supported by the Sakamoto network in various countries to fulfill the objectives of challenging, encouraging and developing all mathematically gifted school students in all countries. It also aims to foster friendly international relationships among students and teachers.
The competition is open to all elementary students who are trained in the Sakamoto Method, a powerful and innovative method for solving math word problems. It was developed by Hideo Sakamoto of Japan in the 1970s. It is especially designed for elementary students with emphasis on the understanding and application of mathematical concepts. In the Philippines, the Philippine Academic Center for Enrichment and Self-actualization (PACES) brought this renowned method from Japan in the hope of nurturing the talents and energy of young minds particularly in the field of math.
For those interested to participate in the World Math Competition, PACES-Sakamoto Philippines is conducting Sakamoto classes. All Sakamoto students will be eligible to compete in the National Math Competition organized by PACES-Sakamoto Philippines to be held in January 2004. With the aim of recognizing and promoting the best junior mathematicians of the country, PACES-Sakamoto Philippines will be sponsoring the winners of the said national contest to Thailand to compete in the World Math Competition 2004. Major sponsor is First Guarantee Life Assurance Company, Inc.
Aside from the free trip to Thailand, the national competition winners, who will be the official Philippine representatives to the World Math Competition, will also receive cash prize, a certificate of distinction, medal or trophy, free Sakamoto classes for two months and other exciting prizes.
Sakamoto classes are held on weekday afternoons and on Saturdays at the PACES-Ortigas. Other Sakamoto Centers which will open soon are located in Greenhills, Escolta, Makati, Katipunan and Quezon City.
