A tribute to Meldy Cojuangco at the Tower Club

OH YES, IT'S JOHNNY! - Johnny Litton -
The Tower Club, the country’s premier and by-invitation-only business and social club, was the venue of an enchanting tribute tendered by the Friends for Cultural Concerns of the Philippines (FCCP) board, officers and members.

The FCCP paid tribute to that lady of grace and refinement, Imelda Ongsiako-Cojuangco, "Meldy Co" to her numerous friends and admirers. Her delicate beauty and unique fashion sense continue to mesmerize just as she continues to touch lives.

Two-time Papal Awardee Meldy Co is indefatigable in her work for several religious and civic charities, particularly the Cofradia de la Inmaculada Concepcion and the J. Moreno Foundation Scholars for Arts and Sciences.

For the special occasion, the Tower Club’s executive chef Michael Kent and Cantonese cuisine chef Cheong Kwan Leong whipped up a fantastic menu that delighted the 168 guests who turned out to express their gratitude and deep respect for Meldy Co. Rigorous preparations preceded the program as the chefs wanted to ensure personalized service and a feast such as only the Tower Club can offer.

The guests gathered at the Taipan Restaurant where they savored carpaccio of yellowfin tuna with white truffle oil, reggiano cheese and grissini; double boiled bamboo pith with pork knuckles and vegetables; calamansi and mint sorbet; sesame crusted seabass fillet with sautéed watercress and soya butter sauce; and molten chocolate soufflé tart.

Tireless FCCP president Thelma Gana organized the event, encouraging everyone to ensure a perfect program. FCCP board director Fortune Ledesma assisted Thelma and served as chairperson for the affair. Bishop Crisostomo Yalung of Antipolo City led the invocation. Chit Gohu and yours truly were the masters of ceremonies.

The memorable program included a lively dance number by Meldy Co’s pretty grandchildren. Soprano Lorna Llanes and tenor Jonathan Badon entranced the audience with some arias from operas. Nena del Rosario Villanueva played several piano selections, followed by Meldy’s daughters Marvie and Ningning Yulo who performed a dance number.

Linda Anido Gomez
choreographed an enchanting dance called Alcamfor, participated in by Thelma Gana; Menchu Concepcion; Cultural Center of the Philippines president Nes Jardin; Mari Lacson; Mars Lambino; Dr. Jimmy Laya; Tereret Liboro; Cez Manalo; Nori Ongsiako; Nene Quimson; Chloe Romulo; and Opap Villonco.

Cultural Center of the Philippines chairman Baltazar Endriga captured everybody’s sentiments in his speech that paid tribute to Meldy Co. Dr. Manny Almelor serenaded the honoree with a few Tagalog songs. The FCCP Chorale, led by musical directress Sonya Valencia, capped the happy evening with a happy song, Hello Meldy, sung to the tune of Hello Dolly. Gamely singing were Chorale members Stella Arenas; Alice Briones; Nene Casimiro; Lulu Castañeda; Sol Tan-Gatue; Memen Dy-Liacco; Nori Ongsiako; and Anna Tirol.

Other guests who came to fete Meldy Co at the Tower Club were Jaime Zobel de Ayala; Bea Zobel; FCCP board directors Mellie Ablaza; Annabelle Adriano; Myrna Borromeo; Beth Cristobal; FCCP founder Chito Madrigal-Collantes; Ising Vasquez; and Nene Leonor.

Meldy Co’s family came in full force, from the Ongsiakos (Cecile, Dely, Baby and Ting) to the Cojuangcos (Marissa, Don Pedro, Choy and Mikey). Also present were Meldy Co’s sister Miriam Montelibano and Meldy’s favorite designer Pitoy Moreno.

To Meldy, here’s to decades of love, grace and friendship. May you remain an inspiration to generations of Filipinas who yearn to fulfill themselves by giving of their selves to the least of their brethren!
