Kites fly over Robinsons Starmills

MANILA, Philippines - Summer means soaking the sun and having fun. The crowd at Robinsons Starmills Pampanga did just that as they gathered to witness a classic summertime tradition — kite flying. A piece of Pampanga’s sky became a painted canvas streaked with colors and images as various kites showcased their majesty at the recent Handyman Summertime Kite-Flying Fun.

Mounted by Handyman Do It Center with the Kite Association of the Philippines (KAP), the event aimed to nurture interest and encourage the love of kite flying among families and friends.

It was a sunny sky with the right breeze and wind, a perfect Sunday treat for families who came to watch the event for free.   Participants in the kite-flying competition trooped early to the registration booth with their colorful guryon (flat and colorful) and 3D (modern tri-dimensional) kites.

Kids who participated in the Boka-boka Making Contest learned the ropes of kite-making using child-friendly materials provided by Handyman and KAP. They were also taught kite-flying techniques.

Twenty-eight people participated in the competition and it was a great sight as an assortment of kite designs dotted the skyline. Some 3D and guryon kites hovered like mighty birds to the delight of the crowd. The judges, composed of Orlando Ongkingco, Yolly Ongkingco and Jimmie Menina, rated the best kites based on the design and aerodynamics or the way the kite maneuvered itself up in the air.

Ten kids who made the most colorful boka-boka kites each received a Nikon personal fan. Five participants were presented with the Best Guryon award and gift certificates from Handyman. The Best 3D Kite awards were given to five participants who also received Handyman gift certificates.

Handyman Do It Center   brought out colorful and interesting ready-made kites for sale. There was also a free scooter ride by Lucky Star Motorcycles. DIY-ers enjoyed the DeWalt Power Tools CaraVan hands-on demonstration.

Summertime or not, kite enthusiasts can find the materials they need to construct the kites at Handyman. There are also ready-made kites sold at the stores for those who want to enjoy kite-flying anytime.
