Protecting dogs and people from rabies

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) with local partner Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC) invited local people to safeguard their dogs by bringing them to a free clinic at Cainta People’s Center recently (World Rabies Day). The free clinics with the assistance of trained volunteer veterinarians offered dog registration and neutering, as well as vaccinations to protect dogs, and the people they live among, against rabies.

“Dogs are an essential part of communities in the Philippines, yet at the same time they are also the main source of rabies, a much feared and misunderstood disease.  Our work in the Philippines, and right across Asia, to deliver dog vaccinations; the only scientifically proven and humane way to eradicate rabies, is delivering real change for dogs and people, as we educate and demonstrate that our humane solution works. Ultimately by protecting dogs from rabies we are protecting the human communities in which they live,” says Dr. Daniel Ventura Jr., WSPA’s Inhumane Culling Campaign Manager for the Philippines.

WSPA and GARC are working closely with Cainta and Marikina local governments to move communities to being rabies-free through the implementation of a comprehensive rabies control programme, including mass dog vaccination and the promotion of responsible pet ownership.
