Too many dogs & cats, not enough homes
MANILA, Philippines - Companion animals will mate and produce litters of puppies or kittens, unless they undergo a surgical procedure called spay (ovario hysterectomy for females) or neuter (castration or the removal of testicles for males).
In a society where stray dogs and cats proliferate the streets, these animals breed uncontrollably with other strays, resulting in puppies and kittens born in the most hostile urban environments.
Many newborn kittens and puppies are found thrown away with the garbage or dumped by the side of the road, eventually dying of sickness, malnutrition, or injuries sustained from vehicular accidents or from injuries inflicted by cruel people.
Even worse, due to the Anti-Rabies Act (RA9482), strays are automatically collected by the city pounds to be killed, resulting in approximately 13,800 dogs and cats being euthanized each month, with many killings done through inhumane methods.
