'The Guardian' of MOA

-

MANILA, Philippines - In the South Arcade of SM Mall of Asia, a bronze statue of a boy with an Aspin or native dog lovingly cradled in his lap easily catches one’s eye.

“The Guardian,” crafted by artist Seb Chua, is his unique way of helping the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) promote a society based on humane principles.

“If more people appreciate the passion behind the craft, it would be easier for artists to lobby for their cause. Art is an essential component of what we are as a people. It reflects our values and the things that matter to us,” said Chua, who is a certified animal lover.

Chua and PAWS chose SM Mall of Asia to be the home of “The Guardian” because it is one of the pet-friendliest malls in the metro and it regularly hosts PAWS’ pet events that help raise funds for the organization’s animal shelter.

“We are very honored to take part in PAWS’ advocacy by presenting this beautiful sculpture to our shoppers,” said SM MOA assistant vice president Steven Tan.

Mall-goers viewing “The Guardian” up close will find its dual messages of tribute inscribed on the statue’s base:

“In honor of responsible Filipino pet owners and their pets.”

“We are each other’s guardian.”

In honor of the volunteers of the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) who have campaigned tirelessly and fearlessly to protect animals from cruelty and harm.

You are the Guardians who inspire.

On behalf of PAWS, its president Nita Hontiveros-Lichauco expressed her heartfelt appreciation, “We would like to thank Seb Chua and Artasia for dedicating this beautiful sculpture to our volunteers.” She added, “We are pleased that it is a sculpture of a young boy and his native dog as it symbolizes that the future of animal welfare is bright in our country.”
