Faas as can be

Puma threw a Jamaican-themed shindig last week to launch their new range of running shoes, the Faas.

The theme was in keeping with the fact that “faas” is the Jamaican word for “fast.”

Also, the Faas line’s main endorser is Jamaican — Usain Bolt, dubbed “the fastest man on Earth.” Thanks to his world and Olympic records in the 100- 200-, and 4X100-meter relays. Reggae music was delivered by Hemp Republic while before and after DJ sets by Red I and Caliph8 provided Reggae-infused dub beats.

And yes, they served Jamaican patties.

Host Eri Neeman talked a bit about the Faas before calling on Amazing Race Asia winner Rich Herrera, who took the mic to talk about giving the Faas 250 a test run that very afternoon.

They then showed a video of him running around the Fort area in the shoes.

Neeman called on Ian Opena, Puma’s product head, to discuss the BioRide features of the Faas.

Their BioRide technology comprises three elements Puma gleaned from researching the running habits/styles of professional runners.

Dubbed Rocker, Flex, and Groove, each serve specific functions. Rocker refers to the outsole shape of the shoe that minimizes contact with the ground by smoothing touchdown and transition. Flex, in turn, are the grooves in key areas around the shoe that respond directly the runner’s foot movements.

Finally, Groove refers to a longer, horizontal groove that runs on the lateral side of the shoe for added stability.

There’s a variety of models in the range for different runners’ needs, going from 100 to 1,000. The smaller the number, the lighter the shoe. The higher it goes, the more cushioning.

Puma had the 250, 300 and 500 models on display — both men’s and women’s.

The colors are bright, which I personally appreciated, since most running shoes are bland neutrals. I’m glad these really pop out. There’s even a colorway that’s inspired by Jamaica’s flag.

While talking to Paul Yap of Up Dharma Down he did mention how incredibly light the Faas 250 was, and how comfortable. I myself have been taking the 500 out for several runs, and while I’m not the fastest runner, it has been pretty comfy.

I certainly enjoy the rocker aspect of the BioRide technology the most; it’s the one I really notice.
