After awaking from a coma & near death, I am back
MANILA, Philippines – I am very happy to be here in Manila, the town of my mom’s birth, to introduce my new book, Heart of Miracles, to readers in the Philippines.
Heart of Miracles is the culmination of nearly five years work. I started writing the book in 2009, and it was published by Hay House, the largest self-development publisher in the world, in February 2015.
The book has international distribution, but the country that I am excited to bring it to most is the Philippines, which is a snapshot venue in the book. My mother Vicki is a recurrent character and my Lola, Marina Meneses Henson, who was 98 at the time, also has an appearance. I am happy to report that she is now a very vibrant 100 years old.
The inspiration for the book came shortly after I had an unexpected open-heart surgery at the age of 30. For a brief period in time after awaking from a coma, I became aware of a vast spiritual world that surrounds us. I became curious about the spiritual world and the influences that it has on our daily lives.
The second profound incident that inspired me to write the book was that my life had been saved by a profound coincidence. I was literally dying in a hospital emergency room when my life was saved by the intervention of an off-duty cardiologist who had come in to the hospital on a weekend to catch up on some paperwork. The likelihood of the doctor being in the emergency room at that specific moment was so remote that it opened my eyes to the possibility of miracles.
The book opens with my near-death experience, and takes the reader on a spiritual quest through India, Italy, the Kingdom of Bhutan, and the Holy Land to trace the footsteps of Jesus. Most chapters have a different spiritual theme or lesson that is demonstrated by the characters and situation of each venue. Some of the themes are perseverance, trust, family, and renewal. The book is a lot of fun, and has hints of Filipino humor, sweetness, and sentimentality to it.
Finally, it concludes with a visit to my Lola in Manila.
It’s currently available through any major eBooks provider, and will launch at Fully Booked in The Fort on Thursday, Jan. 28 from 7-9 p.m. I will be signing books and greeting readers.
