MANILA, Philippines – What is Singapore’s arts center called?

Fondly called “Durian” by Singaporeans and visitors, this arts venue by Singapore’s Marina Bay opened on Oct. 12, 2002. It has become Singapore’s most famous architectural icon, at par with the giant statue of a Merlion across the Singapore River. Its distinctive twin shells, seen from above, resemble giant durians.

Its two main venues are the Concert Hall, whose acoustics were done by Russell Johnson of ARTEC Consultants, and can seat 1,600 guests; and the 2,000-seat theater, which was adapted from traditional European opera houses. At the Concert Hall, it is said that “a pin drop can be heard from the stage and the unwrapping of a candy bar can be very noisy” thanks to the features that include acoustic canopy, reverberation chambers and sound-absorbing and insulating materials.

The center’s programs span all genres of art to encompass music, dance, theater and visual arts.

Last week’s question: Who is the Egyptian-born designer who has created over 3,000 designs including the Oh chair for Umbra, furniture for Artemide, and the brand identities of Citbank and Hyundai, and has been called the Most Famous Industrial Designer in all America by Time magazine?
