The way of the wedge
MANILA, Philippines - One of life’s stranger phenomena is that no matter how many pairs of shoes a woman has, she always looks out for another pair. Each girl understands this must-shoe sentiment deep in her heart.
For this season, one shoe indulgence stylistas will consider must-haves are the chunky, wedge heels at SM. Ranging from strappy and peep-toe sandals to platform snakeskin wedges to gladiator-type shoes and ’70s platform styles, wedges go well with today’s minis, skinny jeans, and dresses.
It’s easy to see why many have chosen to go the way of the wedge. They make one’s legs look longer, body look thinner, and straighten one’s posture. It’s easier to balance on wedges than stilettos — they give more arch support and are easier on the feet and ankles.
Legendary fashion designer Salvatore Ferragamo is credited with having created the wedge shoe from cork and wood because of a leather and rubber shortage in the 1930s. Wedges grew in popularity during World War II, when they were worn with clothes with shoulder pads, making 1940s fashion statements.
They have since come back in many incarnations — louder, more colorful, and outrageous in the 1970s as expressions of the “youthquake” of the times; as high wedge sneakers associated with celebrity pop bands like the Spice Girls in the 1990s, and in great summer style, notably flip-flop wedges in 2006.
