What do you look forin a TV

-

In this day and age when you can upgrade everything and audiovisual technology is relentlessly moving forward, it is no wonder we are surrounded with all things sensorial and beautiful. Huge screens, digital surround sound, slim fit, and stylish are just some of the features we look for in a TV.

We asked TV enthusiasts what they look for in a TV and what they like most about the total viewing experience. Quirky fashionista and TV personality Tessa Prieto-Valdes, TV executive Rikka Dylim, interior designer Ivy Almario, columnist and entertainment editor Ricky Lo, renowned fashion photographer Ronnie Salvacion, film director Paul Soriano, and VJ and radio jock Andi Manzano share what television entertainment is all about.

Ivy Almario: Clarity is my topnotch priority. I also want a big screen and a good sound system. I only get to watch TV during weekends, and the maximum hours I spend on TV are around four hours. I spend my small amount of time watching TV with my husband and my son.

Tessa Prieto-Valdes: I usually look for its sleek design and wide screen. I consider the vividness of color. I don’t want dull colors. Like my fashion sense, it should be colorful and lively. I want my television to be just like that. Super surround sound is another thing that I consider before I buy a unit. I watch TV for one to two hours. I watch my show House Life on QTV, and other programs or DVDs with my family. It’s one way to bond with my kids and my husband, Dennis.

Rikka Dylim: Every good feature it has to offer — from its high- definition clarity of visuals, outstanding color, and excellent audio. I make sure that all these features are packed in one TV with a reasonable and affordable price. My TV- watching hours during weekdays is just an hour or two but on weekends, I spend practically the whole day in front of the TV set with my eight-year-old daughter Nikki. The first TV I bought with my own money in the late ‘80s or early ‘90s was a 14’’ Samsung.

Ronnie Salvacion: The clarity of images, its magnificent display of color and size matters a lot to me. Sleekness in design and its easy-to-use interface are definitely a plus. I also look for a “sleep” feature because most of the time, I fall asleep watching TV. I can’t sleep without the television on so it’s basically open almost 24 hours. The only time that my TV isn’t open is when I’m out on a shoot. My favorite TV partners are bags and bags of chips and a can of cold soda.

Paul Soriano: I prefer a nice-looking big TV since I love to watch a lot of movies on DVD. A big TV enhances the movie-watching experience. Of course, a TV that displays good-quality pictures that makes the movie or program I’m watching a whole lot clearer is also a must. Right now, I really like the new flat screen LCD and Plasma TVs because they give greater picture quality, sound quality, and look good as well. I probably watch about four to five hours of TV a day, most of the time it’s spent watching movies. I watch TV most of the time just by myself, with my girlfriend, and sometimes with my family.

Ricky Lo: I usually look for the packaging — the brand, quality of picture, and if it has a very clear audio. The features of the TV that I’m most particular about are the size, quality, and durability. I want my TV to be just fit for my personal space and it should give me a clear image. I watch TV all the time! I’m glued on it more than 10 hours a day. When I’m in the office it’s usually seven hours; when I’m home I watch until late at night while reading. My officemates are oftentimes my TV buddies because I spend most of my time in the office, but at home I watch alone, especially when the show’s interesting. I don’t want anyone to bother with my TV viewing pleasure but if that person likes what I’m watching, then that’s great. I have someone to share my thoughts with.

Andi Manzano: Before purchasing a TV, I consider the screen size, resolution, crispness of the images, and thickness of the panel. Since I’m spending that kind of money, I also want a brand that has a good reputation. I spend about an hour watching TV every day. I usually watch alone or with my family.

These TV zealots may come from different fields but they all dole out on one pastime — watching TV! For their viewing pleasure, they want to maximize all that audio-visual technology can offer from clarity of the images to a whole cinematic experience.
