Help for Alzheimer patients

SECOND WIND - Barbara Gonzalez-Ventura -

All my readers know my mother has Alzheimer’s disease.  My research has told me there are seven levels to this disease.  I think my mother entered her seventh level maybe four or five months ago.  Suddenly she became violent and it was difficult to control her.  She would hit and spit at her nurses, horrifying many, especially me.  Normal, my mother would never have done any of those things.  But now she has AD.  It has removed all signs of normalcy from her.

In a panic I went to a bookstore looking for anything on AD.  I found Alzheimer’s, Caring For Your Loved One, Caring For Yourself by Sharon Fish Mooney, a British nurse.  It is the best book I have read so far.  Somewhere in there she said that once the disease is advanced, chemical medicines are useless.  I asked Ramon Tan of Carica fame what I could do about my mother just to help her.  He admitted he did not know much about AD but he recommended that I give her COQ10 and noni juice first and passionflower tea to put her to sleep and calm her down.

So I decided to stop her chemical drugs and switch to herbals.  I also added Gotu Cola capsules, something like gingko biloba, and turmeric capsules, because once I was watching the Oprah show and the doctor said turmeric was good for Alzheimer’s.

One day during my visit I was feeding her cookies.  That is our ritual.  I bring cookies and we eat them together while I let her chatter.  Once in a while I answer and talk to her.  Suddenly she looked at me and said, “I like these.  They taste good.”  I was delighted then but I thought it was the single flash of lucidity that I had finally caught.  But since then, and that was about a month ago, she has been consistent.  I give her cookies, she says, “I like these.  They taste good.”  Then she smiles at me and I smile back.  It is our new ritual and it heartens me.

Then suddenly her male nurse sent me a text requesting that I double the diaper supply because she wets them so strongly now.  That took me aback.  Does it mean her kidneys are working better?  I doubled the supply immediately.  Her kidneys continue to work well.

In reaction to her bloody, wounded legs I saw Jethropa liquids at Carica and decided to buy her the lotion for people with psoriasis, and then I saw a Jethropa massage oil.  I also got that for her.  In a week her legs began to clear and now, if you look at her legs, they are smooth, no longer bloody, scratched and wounded.  I owed that to Joel, her nurse, who patiently applies the liquids and massages her with them.

Also, my mother is heavier now.  She had gotten so skinny but now she eats three times a day.  Even the female nurses and caregivers can feed her.  There was a time they had to ask men to feed her because she was so violent against women.

Then, about three weeks ago I ran into Ramon Tan at Carica again and he gave me a bottle of something he was experimenting with.  “In a way it’s like Viagra,” he said laughing.  “It cleans your system.  It will clean nerves.  Try it on your mom.  Give her two tablespoons a day.  One in the morning, another at night.”

I gave it to Joel to give to her.

One day my masseuse comes running to me to give me a massage.  She is excited.  She said, “I gave your mom a massage.  I was massaging her head when we were about to end when suddenly she said, ‘That’s enough.  I  will sleep now.’ Can you believe that?  She said it at the right time. That’s a miracle, if you ask me.”  I thought so, too. I have to say this: I seriously believe in the herbal cure now.

My mother has been on herbals for maybe four months.  The results are slow but they are there.  Once upon a time her eyes were completely blank, now her look is less blank. She tells me she likes my cookies while I’m feeding them to her.  She tells the masseuse she is ready to sleep when she is.  Her nurses report that when they ask her what her name is, she responds, “My name is Fe.”  That is a correct answer.

Last Saturday my mother told me she saw her mother.  I asked her, “Do you see my father?”  She said, “Yes, I see him.”  I asked her, “Do you see Max (her second husband)?  She said, “Who?”  I had to laugh.

Do you see the miracle?  I actually laughed during my visit.  I never used to do that before.  I laughed because when my mother is better, then I, too, feel much, much better.   I want to hit my head against a wall.  Why did I not discover these herbal medicines much earlier?  True, they are not all that inexpensive but they are cheaper than chemical drugs and I could have helped my mother sooner.

I don’t say that they will cure her Alzheimer’s disease.  I do not know that yet.  They might.  But they are relieving her and helping her live better.  In the end, that’s all I want to give her — an easier, better life and these herbal medicines are of tremendous help.
