Pamper your pooch

DOG DAZE - Kathy Moran -
It was Tasha’s turn to get the royal treatment.

I make it a point that once a week I give one of my two Toy Poodles, either Gorby or Tash, a special treat. I like to take time out to have special bonding moments with each of them – one at a time.

Tasha and I made our way to Pooch Park Doggie Day Care on Julia Vargas St. (where the Auto Depot is), on a rainy Tuesday afternoon.

First, a little about Tasha.

She loves riding the car, but only if she gets to sit on my lap as I drive, and stick her head out of the window, too. She yips and yaps a little each time she enters the car. Perhaps to ask me where am I taking her.

My oso (bear) and not aso (dog) is how I fondly refer to my furry, a-bit-on-the-heavy-side Tasha. She does look like a cuddly bear and she is the perfect cuddle mate on a cool night.

I like to take Tasha out because I want her to get more socialized. With people as well as other dogs. She sometimes gets a bit scared when other people try to carry her – afraid that they may take her away and not feed her right, I guess. Whatever it is, I enjoy both Gorby and Tasha. But the two are as different as boy and girl.

‘Nuff said.

"I thought of putting up Pooch Park because I wanted a place where people could leave their dogs," said the ever-smiling Oliver Tan, 27, owner of Pooch Park. "I love to take my dogs with me where I go but there are places where they are not welcome."

Pooch Park Doggie Day Care is a new concept. Oliver said that he has long wanted to put up a place like this one. Pooch Park provides a doggie day-care service. "I saw the needs of dog lovers and their dogs and with Pooch Park, I hope to provide answers to these needs," said Oliver.

Growing up with dogs is what nurtured in Oliver that undying loyalty to them. Today, he lives with a few Miniature Schnauzers, because, he says, he loves the way they look and their temperament, too.

It was Tasha’s turn to take a walk with Benjamin Verano, the resident dog trainer. I warn Benjamin that Tasha can be a handful when going for a walk. He smiles and they walk out the door.

Oliver is happy that the staff members he has at Pooch Park are friendly – to dogs and their humans, too. Several people bring their dogs to the park for its grooming services while others have opted to use the doggie day-care services. "There are some people who leave their dogs while they go to the mall. We have also had a client who left his dog here when he went to Boracay," added Oliver. Oliver emphasized the importance of keeping a clean pooch place. He believes that people will come and enthrust their pets to you if they see that the place is always clean.

And, even if the concept of leaving a dog in a doggie day-care is new, Oliver says that the younger set of clients have been willing to give it a try. "And they have been happy with our services," he added.

"She is a good doggie," said Benajmin to me as he returned with Tasha.

It was time for the highlight of Tasha’s day: a massage with Manny Antay.

As Manny began the message he started rubbing the feet and legs of Tasha and a few minutes into the massage Tasha was all smiles – as doggie smiles go.

Manny told me that he learned about dog massage when he was working at a veterinary clinic. He used to help the vet, who worked with dogs with sprains. "I learned how to massage their pain away," said Manny. "Nasasarapan naman sila sa masahe."

Indeed.

The last stop for Tasha was to the doggie treat stand. I got her Buffalo Wings. These are rawhide treats shaped like, well, buffalo wings. Tasha was shy while we were at the Pooch Park so I saved it for later.

The other services offered at Oliver’s Pooch Park are stopover inns, socialization classes, puppy kindergarten, training classes, grooming and a spa. They also sell pet accessories, and dog food.

Here’s a complete list of the services offered at Pooch Park Doggie Day Care.
Grooming Services
Full Groom. Let your pooch look its best with our Full Groom service. This is a real makeover for your beloved baby. The service includes a full relaxing bath, haircut and hair styling.

Blower and combing. This instant hair-do fix is great for those in a hurry for an event or a party. A quick hair styling for the pooch on a gimmick!

Dematting. Got pooch’s hair all tangled up? Let’s try to save those beautiful furnishings and have our professional groomers untangle those mats.

Nail Clipping (with normal ear cleaning). Proper nail length is very important in preserving the posture and comfort of your pooch. No more deformed toes for little pooch and no more scratches on your furniture, and most importantly on your skin!

Medicated Ear Cleaning (especially for ear mites). Stop ear scratching and smelly ears by cleaning pooch’s ears. Ear mites cause ear irritation and produce the reddish-brown goo that makes the ears itchy and smelly. This is a very important grooming routine to keep your pooch happy and healthy.

Toothbrush. Prevent bad breath and tooth decay by brushing pooch’s teeth. An ounce of prevention is a pound of cure.

Flea Bath. Ticks and fleas are one of the most common pests that can irritate your pooch. These pests can cause severe sickness and disease to your pooch – and even to you! Better be safe than sorry. Give pooch a flea bath regularly.

Dog Spa (full groom with essential oil massage). Massage is great for dogs. Treat your pooch to a wonderful dog spa experience where he will feel great inside and out!
Day Care Service
Have you ever had a problem where you couldn’t go out or do something because there was no one to take care of your little pooch? Does pooch need exercise and training? Pooch Park will take very good care of your pet. You can choose any of their services that will greatly benefit your pooch’s physical and emotional development. The staff is properly trained in taking care of and entertaining your beloved pet through games and training.

Early socialization is very important to pooch’s development. According to The Dog Bible, "Early socialization of puppies – getting them exposed to as many sights and sounds as humanly possible – is fundamental to raising a well-balanced dog. A puppy that is kept isolated will miss that developmental period and may grow up fearful of strangers and the world around him. There are many behavioral skills that dogs can only learn from other dogs, so puppies need to hang out with others of their own kind. Meeting members of his own species is vitally important."
