A Samsung home is a healthy home

- Joseph Cortes -
We live in difficult times. As technology brings with it the conveniences of a modern life, it also raises the risks we encounter every day. Industries bring with them pollution, be it through the air, water or sound.

Samsung Electronics, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of home appliances, unveiled this week its biggest range of enhanced Silver Nano Health System home appliances reinforcing its technology leadership in the digital appliances industry.

Samsung Electronics Philippines president and CEO Hyuck Jae Shim says Samsung has the health of its consumers in mind when developing new technologies. In the case of its Silver Nano Health System line of home appliances, the well-being of the whole family has been considered by the firm’s research and development team.

"With so many brands in the market offering similar products, Samsung offers something new to its clients," says Shim. "Only Samsung offers the Silver Nano Health System with its appliances."

Presented were 14 models in three product categories – washing machines, air conditioners and refrigerators – including the world’s thinnest air conditioner, that utilize the Silver Nano Health System, a new technology effectively removes bacteria, viruses and fungi, penetrates and kills their cells, suppresses their ability to breed, and therefore effectively inhibit the cell from growing. These appliances meet the growing trend among consumers who want a cleaner and healthier home environment.

Shim adds, "Samsung is recognized for its relentless pursuit of technological and product innovations that are often regarded as the standard of excellence for the industry. Our enhanced Silver Nano Health System will speed up out goal to become the top premium brand in the digital appliances business."

From ancient times, silver has been used for medicines and household goods because this non-toxic precious metal has the power to sterilize and deodorize. Ancient Egyptians used silver to keep their food stores free of fungus and mold, while the Phoenicians used silver containers to keep germs from contaminating water supply. In North America, the pioneers would put a silver coin in milk jugs to keep them fresh without refrigeration. In 14th century Europe, wealthy families had their children use silver spoons as a precaution against the bubonic plague. As late as 1885, a German doctor put a mild silver solution in the eyes of babies at birth to prevent eye infections.

The Silver Nano Health System technology was developed following these principles, and is utilized differently in the appliances.

Samsung’s new line of washing machines feature Silver Wash, a technology that can kill 99.9 percent of bacteria in wash loads and coats clothing with anti-bacterial protection which lasts for up to 30 days. A number of 99.9 percent sterling silver plates are placed in the water inlet to produce silver ions through electrolysis, charging the wash and rinse water with nano-sized silver particles for a cleaner wash. Because of its small size, roughly one billionth of a meter or 75,000 times smaller than the width of human hair, it can penetrate clothes better and attack bacteria, which are bigger than the silver ions. The ions also offer anti-bacteria protection, a boon for those sensitive to skin allergies, and sterilizes the wash, a plus for difficult to wash laundry such as blouses, lingerie and even blankets. This process work even at low temperatures, producing the same sanitizing effect as boiling laundry, and yet minimizing damage to clothing and conserve energy. The machine also has a built in Silver Nano Filter with a special resin containing Silver Nano ions that disinfect and sterilize germs. These Silver Nano features are guaranteed to last for the lifetime of the washing machine.

Two top-loading and front load drum washing models are available. The front load drum model uses a high-efficiency automotive damper to absorb the vibration of spin cycles. A direct drive inverter motor reduces noise by seven decibels to just 53 decibels.

The Samsung air conditioner systems feature the Silver Nano Health System technology through Silver Nano coated evaporators and filters that prevent bacteria from being recycled in the environment and effectively stopping the growth of fungi. Since Silver Nano technology is applied to the heat exchanger and filter, and a greater surface is treated with a Silver Nano technology, the air becomes cleaner, fresher, and healthier. The technology provides 99.9 percent disinfection, even killing the influenza virus. Not only does it kill molds and bacteria that can cause allergies and sickness, it also deodorizes the air, producing pure, clean air for better health.

Two kinds of air conditioners were launched, including the world’s slimmest air conditioner. The new models come with the Silver Nano Metallic Filter, incorporating Silver Nano anti-bacterial technology and improving electronic dust collection. It has the lowest noise performance at only 28 decibels and is also equipped with a digital display and digital melodies. Four split-type and three window-type air conditioners are available.

Samsung’s range of refrigerators are equipped with Silver Nano features, like the Twin Cooling System, offering a coating of silver on the internal surfaces of the unit to prevent germs from growing. Silver particles coated on the inner walls of a refrigerator stop bacteria from multiplying and keep the inside of the refrigerator clean and hygienic. Nano-sized silver particles in the Silver Nano deodorizer and inner lining prevent the diffusion of bacteria, ensuring that fruits and vegetables stay fresh. By keeping the cooling environment germ-free, food stays fresher for up to 15 days.

All door and side-by-side refrigerator models feature Silver Nano health system.

Samsung’s Silver Nano technology initiative is the result of an extensive three-year $10 million research program conducted in Korea. Independent test have been conducted on the anti-bacterial technology and is certified for its sanitation and bacteria properties in Japan, Korea and Germany.

Shim says appliances utilizing the Silver Nano Health System technology were introduced in the Philippines in May 2004. Sales of many Samsung appliances rose since then. Sales of two-door refrigerators gained 45 percent of the market share, making it the number one brand in this market. No-frost refrigerators gained 20 percent of the market, and fully automatic washing machines gained 20 percent market share.

When the Silver Nano Health System appliances were introduced, the appliances were high-end items. With this week’s launch, the technology has been applied to both medium- and lower-priced appliances.

"In the Philippines, most consumers come from the B and C classes. With the lower priced appliances, more consumers will be able to enjoy the well-being Samsung’s new line of refrigerators, washing machines and air conditioners offer."
