Cool dog, hot country

ASK YOUR VET - Dr. Lydia Mangahas -
Dear Dr. Mangahas,

I recently bought a Siberian Husky that was three months old and has papers. When I got my dog he already had four vaccinations. My questions are: 1) Is it OK to give him ice water? 2) At what age can I start him with a trainer? 3) I know that Siberian Huskies come from cold countries and I would like to know if they can survive in our warm climate. 4) What vitamins can I give my Husky? Thanks for your time.

John Santos

The Siberian Husky was developed by the Chukchie people in ancient times in Northeast Asia. It is a hardy sled dog with superior strength, speed and stamina. Apart from being a sled racer, the Siberian Husky is also a helpful dog in search and rescue work.

Accustomed to cold weather and vigorous activity, this dog needs a lot of space and exercise. A number of dog owners in the Philippines have managed, however, to raise Huskies, despite our tropical climate. These Huskies stay in big areas with good ventilation, or enough trees to give them shade and wind.

It is all right to give Huskies cold water. It is better to start training them at age six months. You may give them vitamin C, calcium, pet tabs, Nutrivet Multitabs and Nutrivet Healthy Weight Formula Tab as supplements.

At age six months, you should start giving your dog Heartgard for prevention of heartworm. Bathing him once or twice a week and brushing his coat every day are a must, too.
