Elegant couturier and "knit queen" Lulu Tan Gan- Gueta has added another gem to her crown of achievements. She was recently conferred the special award Chevalier dans lOrdre des Arts et Lettres by the honorable Ambassadrice de France Renee Veyret at a glittering and exclusive ceremony held at the ambassadress plush North Forbes residence.
The occasion was an intimate gathering of close family and friends, including the trendy and well-heeled set of Manilas movers and shakers. Veyret honored Lulu by raising a toast in her name and saying that Lulu had done so much to promote ties between France and the Philippines.
Conferring the insignia of Chevalier in the Order of the Arts and Letters on Lulu, Veyret said, "Fashion design is a very special form of visual art. In France, Sonia Rykiel, Yves Saint-Laurent, Jean-Paul Gaultier are highly regarded among the great artists, painters, sculptors or writers, all brilliant stars of our civilization.
"Lulu, as an artist yourself, you have had a tremendous success in fashion; the originality of your approach and use of fabric and materials have made you shine with the brightest stars on the catwalk, both in the Philippines and abroad.
"Consequently, your exposure in the international fashion scene has had an important influence not only on your creations, but on your entrepreneurial skills as well. Since 1982, you have participated in fashion and trade exhibits here and abroad, in Asia and Europe, including the very popular Salon du Pret a Porter at the Porte de Versailles in Paris.
"Such a rich experience has afforded you the vision to create designs that follow trends worldwide, and yet are suited to the demands of the local market."
Cheering Lulu on in her moment of glory were gorgeous daughters Jessica and Sam Tan-Gan and dashing husband Josef Gueta who looked ready to burst with pride and joy.
Ambassadrice Veyret, the epitome of classic French charm and dignity, ensured it was a truly delightful evening by playing the consummate and gracious hostess and going out of her way to make all the guests feel at home.
The grand finale to the evening was Lulus innovative gift to Ambassadrice Veyret: A CD that showcased the winning creations of young Filipino designers who had won major prizes in France. Interestingly, the creations were not modeled by Cindy Crawford or Claudia Schiffer, much to the surprise and delight of the Ambassadrice, but by Veyret herself. Lulu had used her creativity and simply transposed the images to make it appear as though Ambassadrice Veyret was the model.
Congratulations, Lulu!
