ASK YOUR VET - Dr. Lydia Mangahas -
Dear Dr. Mangahas,

I’m sharing this with you for the benefit of the numerous homeless cats and dogs out there on the streets or in shelters and pounds that are abandoned and waiting for their turn to become pulutan, run over, kicked aside or to die of slow starvation.

As far as I know, in the US they scout around city pounds and shelters for trainable canines to be used as sniffing dogs for drugs or bombs and some even as Dr. Dog or Cat so that they can help patients in hospitals.

I wish we could do the same here for our poor homeless cats and dogs.

Your intentions seem very good but unlike in the US where the government lends support to organizations of the kind you are thinking of, the Philippines is a country where even homeless humans cannot be provided shelter, the hungry, food, and the sick, medicines.

There are very few citizens and groups in our country that offer shelter to a limited number of stray cats and dogs, take care of them until they are ready with adoption, and carry the cost of expensive medical treatment for those in poor health or with skin diseases even. In some cases, stray animals are just put to sleep in some areas in the Philippines.

I hope we find enough kind-hearted people who could help fulfill your dream. Count me in as an associate.

NATURAL CURE TO THE RESCUE
Dear Dr. Mangahas,

I would like to ask for advice about my dog Santi who has a tumor. The city vet advised me that since there are neither qualified vets nor facilities that can handle cases of dogs with tumors, he told us to just enjoy the dog while he is alive. I’ve since showered Santi with all my love but that did not stop me from looking for homeopathic remedies over the Internet. I have tried vitamin E with selennium and in three weeks, there has been a noticeable reduction of the tumor’s size. The dose is 200 mcg of selennium daily plus vitamin E. I’ve stopped giving processed dog food. I’m lucky in the sense that Santi loves to eat spinach, apples and other types of healthy food. I’ve heard raw meat can help but I am afraid of salmonella.

I would appreciate your comments on homeopathic remedies and other natural cures that can enhance and improve Santi’s immune and cell manufacturing systems.

You may continue giving selennium at 200 mcg daily and vitamin E to Santi, given the dramatic change in the size of her tumor. It is best for you to observe for one month the effects of these medicines on Santi. If the size of her tumor continues to lessen, that would be a good sign.

Homeopathy is a system of treating diseases based on the administration of minute doses of a drug that in massive amounts produce symptoms similar to that of the disease itself. An example is Sangobion, which helps in the production of RBC or red blood corpuscles.

I would like to think that Santi’s problem is just a case of fat tumor, which can easily be removed. If the tumor is not causing her so much pain or discomfort, then it could just be left as is.
