Trend station for the home

-
Home interior trends, like fashion, are always changing, always fascinating. These evolve as lifestyles and creative forces interplay with the times.

Our Home, the lifestyle store that’s home to great designs at great prices, asked three young and dynamic interior designers to set up their dream rooms using three of the latest interior trends: urban, spice, and botanical.

Each look is fresh and dynamic: Modern urban settings keep your energy high with clean lines, color, and elegance. The exotic spice look brings forward the warm hues and intriguing textures of multi-cultural expressions while botanical touches create a beautiful reality with organic shapes, earthy colors, bold blooms, and tiny bouquets.

Here, Tricia Barbers, Dan Lichauco, and Rina Madulid showcase their dream rooms from Our Home.
Tricia Barbers’ Spice Dining Room
"I like different things that suit my different moods," says Tricia Barbers. "My taste is rather eclectic – I don’t go for trends, but things that catch my attention."

Tricia, who took Fashion Design at FIDM in San Francisco and Interior Design at the Philippine School of Interior Design, comes from a family of artists. Her father is the well-known abstract painter, print maker, and graphic artist Raul Isidro, while her mother Annabelle Isidro used to design clothes and run a shop. She is married to Surigao del Norte Governor Robert Lyndon Barbers and has three children: Stephanie Marie, 9; Robert Matthew, 7; and Robert Luke, 3.

When asked to set up her dream room at Our Home, Tricia – not surprisingly – opted for a spice look because it was "challenging. It’s a mixture of different cultures and if you travel a lot, you tend to collect odds and ends that create this spice look."

Likewise, Tricia chose to put together a dining room because "it is my favorite area. That is where the family usually comes together to share the day’s ups and downs, and to discuss issues, the next vacation, and anything under the sun."

Tricia describes her spice dining room as "cozy, not terribly bright, a dining set for six ("We are five in the family"), and with lots of metal and glass. While she is basically artistic, she infuses a lot of common sense in planning her room.

"You have to incorporate the function of the room into your design," she says. "Otherwise, you end up with a room that’s nice to look at but not to stay or live in." She adds, "I like useful things, not simply decorative ones."

Space is another important consideration for Tricia. "You have to first consider what the space is being used for," she says. "And then you have to plan the space."

In a dining room, for example, the dining table "is the most important piece of furniture you will be using." As such, "it is important to measure the space so you can get the right table size – round tables are perfect for condos or townhouses."

Likewise, it is important to "design with a certain look in mind. Choose a look you like, then plan the color scheme."

Tricia had a lot of fun putting together her dream dining room from Our Home. Her favorite pieces? "The mosaic dining table which reminds me of Morocco, and the red carpet which just livens up the room."
Dan Lichauco’s Urban Living Room
"I chose the urban look because it is challenging for designers to find the right balance between the activity in an urban setting and the quietude needed in designing houses and apartments," Dan Lichauco, principal architect of Archion Architects, explains why he selected this design trend. "The urban look allows me to explore different ideas that are more experimental."

An Architecture graduate of the University of Santo Tomas, Dan holds master’s degrees in Architecture and Urban Planning from the University of Michigan, as well as a master’s degree in Classical Architecture and Urban Design from the University of Notre Dame.

Describing himself as a true-blue urbanite, he "likes to be reminded of where I am." As such, his dream space should be a "refuge, but at the same time still be complex enough to maintain an urban identity."

Dan opted to set up a living room because "it is the most gregarious room in the house. It is where people gather, the scene of a lot of activities. It is also the most urban setting, which shows a great deal of character."

In planning his urban living room at Our Home, Dan chose to "pick individual pieces in a certain visual style. When you create a room, there should always be a dominant element and space to identify it. Never be afraid to experiment."

He describes the room as "a bit schizoid in its identity, but able to the handle the different functional demands, both visually and in terms of durability. As the scene of lots of activities, it should be able to handle both party and intimate settings wherein the user is either stimulated or put at ease."

Among the pieces he put together, Dan considers the spiral vase by Home Inspirations as his best find. "I enjoyed the vases because they can be effective singularly as well as in groups," he says. "The vase has the ability to minimize the effect of a bouquet, as well as appreciate the beauty of a single rose. It makes the grouping of flowers take on a new dimension."
Rina Madulid’s Botanical Spice Bedroom "I chose the spice look because it enhances the color of nature," says Rina Madulid. "It gives life and joy to a room and makes the area look pleasing."

An Interior Design graduate of the College of the Holy Spirit, Rina also loves exploring nature, hence her spice look has touches of botanica with its organic shapes and earthy colors.

When planning a room, Rina tends to "lay out the furniture in a manner in which I can easily access a certain area." She also chooses the furniture very carefully – especially the quality and the materials being used.

Rina chose to put together a bedroom in Our Home because "it is my favorite room. It’s where I can relax and express myself."

Her great finds? "The apple green leather love seat and the plant behind it give life to the room," she says. "It complements the beddings and curtains, and gives accent to the room because of the color contrast it provides."

Our Home is located at the Lower Ground Level of SM Megamall Mega A.
