What you probably didn't know about 'Fifty Shades of Grey'

Alixandra Caole Vila - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The trilogy Fifty Shades made the official debut in 2012 and 2013. Since its release, it has been gaining notorious fame for being tagged as one of the raciest and controversial pieces of literature.

On July 24, the movie trailer was unraveled and it became one of the most talked about immediately in social media. Those who have watched the trailer had ogled over Jamie Dornan's drop dead gorgeous body and had dreamt of being on Dakota Johnson's shoes. Every one who had pressed play know that the movie is going to be raunchy. But here are what you probably didn't know about Fifty Shades of Grey.

Fifty Shades is not the original title and E.L. James is not the real name of the author.

It was originally called Master of The Universe.  E.L. James used the “Snowqueen’s Icedragon,” as her pen name. E.L. James is not her real name either, her real name is Erika Mitchell.

The characters were inspired by Edward and Bella of Twilight.

Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey are patterned on the characters of  Bella Swan and Edward Cullen. It was composed as a fan fiction based on Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight. Because of the too “for adults” content, it was taken down on the site and reposted it on E.L. James’ own site (FiftyShades.com), edited the story, and then restructured it without the reference on the Twilight characters. She then changed the  title from Master of the Universe to Fifty Shades of Grey.

It was first released virtually.

Fifty Shades of Grey was released by a virtual publisher in Australia. It was sold as an e-book and printed via request and was not widely marketed, except through word-of-mouth.

It became the Mommy’s daily newspaper.

Word of mouth became an effective advertising medium. It has sold over 100 million copies around the globe and was tagged by the media as the “Mommy Porn.”

Film right was sold even before the book was published.

Fifty Shades of Grey became a money maker. E.L. James sold it to Universal/Focus features for a jaw dropping $5 million even before printing the book. When the book was published, E.L. James became the top selling author in world with a total of  $91 million sales. It has sold more than Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows and The Da Vinci Code.

There is a wine inspired by Fifty Shades of Grey.

Because of the gaining popularity of Fifty Shades, it has attracted various branding opportunities. Aside from the obvious sexy stuff like lingerie, undies, and stockings, there is a wine created with the hint of Fifty Shades. Yes, and there are two blends, which certainly will cater to your discerning taste – The White Silk and Red Satin. Now stripping down to your skivvies is a bottle of wine easier and classier.

A woman filed a divorce because of Fifty Shades of Grey.

On 2012, a British woman divorced her hubby on grounds the erotic bestseller Fifty Shades of Grey failed to get a rise out of his languishing libido.

Fifty Shades of Grey is a movie to watch out for, and I bet all the fans are dying to see Mr. Grey in action. But unfortunately for the fans, waiting is all we could do for the meantime. As Christian Grey had said over and over, Laters, baby.
