Katharina Lehnert: Tennis court princess
“My goal is to have a positive impact on the development of tennis,” says Katharina Lehnert.

Katharina Lehnert is a stunner!

But it’s not just her beauty that’s captivating, she packs a mean wallop on the tennis courts as well.

The 22-year-old Fil-German has been playing the sport since she was seven, after her mom introduced her to the game. She actually tried football, but she didn’t enjoy it as much.

Now, Katharina has been playing around the world, gaining valuable experience, and important ranking points as she continues her climb atop the ladder of the sport.

She has also been representing the Philippines in various international events, and we do hope to see her carrying the country’s colors again in this year’s edition of the SEA Games in Malaysia.

PHILIPPINE STAR: What’s a typical day for you, trainingwise?

KATHARINA LEHNERT: Before practice, I warm up for about 30 minutes, then I practice two hours in the morning. After that, I have lunch. In the afternoon, I start warming up again and then practice one-and-a-half to two hours more. Then, I have fitness training for about two-and-a-half hours. This is a typical practice day for me when I’m not on a tournament! So, I’m putting in a lot of work.

How has your experience been representing the country?

I am very proud to represent the Philippines! It’s an honor for me to play for the country. They all support me a lot. Especially my fans! I just love the Filipinos. They are respectful, helpful, and friendly. I also love Filipino food!

What have been your achievements so far in the sport?

Well, in juniors, my highest ranking was 69 in the world. I played in Wimbledon and the French Open. I have four ITF titles in singles and three ITF doubles titles. In the Sea Games, I got a silver and two bronze medals. And in the Fed Cup, we were the winner in the group Asia Pacific Oceania 2 after 13 years. And this year, we are playing one group higher. This was very special for me!

What events have you lined up to compete in this year?

I’m going to play higher tournaments in 2017. A lot of $60,000 tournaments and $25,000# tournaments. I will also compete in some WTA tournaments. It’s important to participate in more events for ranking points and to compete at a higher level.

Tennis hasn’t grown exponentially locally, how do you think you can help change that?

Tennis all over the world isn’t getting the recognition it deserves. But my goal is to have a positive impact on its development. Right now, as a player, I will represent the Philippines as best as I can! Once my playing career is over, I want to support the rising players and help them with my knowledge.
