REAL SPORTS SCENE - Anthony Suntay - The Philippine Star

The month of February is not just special to me because it’s my birth month, it is also, as per Presidential Proclamation, National Down Syndrome Consciousness Month.

This is the time of the year when the Down Syndrome Association of the Philippines (DSAPI) lines up multiple programs to enhance awareness for Down Syndrome and to raise funds for their endeavors.

DSAPI is a non-stock, non-profit organization, founded in 1991 by parents and concerned physicians. The org aims to offer support to families who have a child with Down Syndrome and look to develop projects concerning the genetic disorder.

Medically speaking, Down Syndrome is caused by the presence of all or part of a third copy of chromosome 21. It is typically associated with physical growth delays, characteristic facial features, and mild-to- moderate intellectual disability. According to studies, the average IQ of a young adult is 50, equivalent to the mental age of about a normal eight-year-old.

Last week, DSAPI had its annual golf tournament at the Tagaytay Midlands, where close to the 140 golfers enjoyed the fantastic weather and camaraderie of the game with old friends and new acquaintances.

Winning in the tournament was secondary to being able to help the organization and its membership base.

The event is already a staple in the golfing community schedule that they have annual sponsors in Whealth Inc., MegaFiber, BrainMaster, First Lucky Holdings Corp., Coco Sorbetero, Yellow Cab, and Canon. Their major sponsors were Wings Technology Enterprise, Belle Corp., Ikkey and Ella Cruz. Premium sponsors included Unilever, Hankyu Hanshin Express, RCBC, Tadeco, Golf Worx Learning, Cargohaus, with Hole-in-One sponsors Autohub, Delta, and Club Car.

Incubix CEO John San Pedro chills out with his Coco Sorbetero triple treat.

Other events lined up for the month are the Happy Walk on the 22nd at SM North EDSA, and the Dine for Down at the Highlands Prime Steakhouse at Capital Commons in Pasig.

For more information on these events and the DSAPI, email at dsapi@hotmail.com or visit its website www.dsapi.org.

See you in 2016!
