How to turn on the good genes and turn off the bad ones

SAVOIR FAIRE - Mayenne Carmona - The Philippine Star

When a person has an inherited disease (diabetes, cancer, bi-polarism, hypertension, heart  ailment, etc.),  one automatically assumes that it is unavoidable because it is in his genes, or in his DNA.    Every cell in your body contains DNA — half from your mother and half from your father.  That’s your genetic blueprint that makes you who you are.

Until recently, scientists believed there was little or nothing you could do to affect genes inherited from your parents and grandparents.  The good news is, you have more control than you think you do.

Recently, I had the good fortune of being introduced to Dr. Alfredo Galvez, a recipient  of the 2010 PhilDev Award given to outstanding Filipino-Americans in the field of science and technology.  President P-Noy, in fact, was in the USA to give Dr. Galvez his award.  I raised my concern about families being predisposed to one particular fatal disease and if so, what are the chances of the healthy members to protect themselves from this genetic predisposition?

Dr. Galvez says that most of the changes affecting our health don’t occur in the genes themselves; they happen in the “epigenetic  switches.”  While you can’t reverse a gene mutation, you can influence  epigenetic  switches through lifestyle choices.

Who’s the (Cell’s) Boss?

What does epigenetic mean?

Dr. Galvez explains, “Within each of the same cell is a higher level of complexity called epigenome.  The epigenome acts like the boss of the cell, instructing the genome which genes to turn on and off.  The epigenome can also determine how well a cell functions and that’s where we come in.  Our good lifestyle choices turn healthy genes on and unhealthy genes off.  On the other hand, bad choices do just the opposite and can lead to serious health problems.”

In simple layman’s language, he says, “Who you are is written in both pen and pencil.  Things written in pen, you can’t change.  That is DNA.  But things written in pencil, you can. That is epigenetics.”

The trouble with us is, we know exactly what we are supposed to do like eat healthy, exercise regularly, have enough rest, reduce stress, etc., but we do exactly the opposite.

I have witnessed a heart bypass patient who continues to eat lechon. Or diabetic friends who take in loads of carbs and sweets.

Improving on your genetic code

Dr. Galvez says, “What if there was a simple proven way to turn good genes on, turn bad genes off, and become your best possible you?  To improve upon the genetic code your parents left you and even pass on those healthy epigenetics to your own kids?”

What his question was leading to was his discovery of a naturally occurring soy peptide in 1996 during his post doctoral research at the University of California Berkeley .  As the discoverer, he was given the honor to name the peptide.  He named it  Lunasin which in Filipino means to heal or to remedy.

So how does it work?

Lunasin is the first nutritional compound which when ingested attaches to your epigenome and influences it to turn on the good genes and turn off the bad genes, thus promoting optimal health.  Moreover, Lunasin influences the epigenome in multiple cell types, so its effects go beyond individual genes.  Each epigenome in each cell type is different.  If Lunasin affects the epigenome in a particular cell type one way, it will affect the epigeneme in  another cell type another way.  That’s how it can provide multiple health benefits, such as: cholesterol management, inflammation reduction, antioxidant benefits, (cancer prevention) , improved immunity, overall cellular health, and the list keeps growing!

Warding off cancer

In fact, Dr. Galvez shares that one Lunasin capsule contains 25 grams of bioactive soy peptide that can minimize the chances of getting cancer.

I read testimonials on Lunasin that Dr. Galvez showed and they were impressive.  One patient with stage 4 pancreatic and liver cancer had a CAT scan at Mayo Clinic, USA , after taking Lunasin capsules for five months.  Her doctor was baffled that the mass at the bottom of the pancreas was shrinking and all the tumors in the liver had shrank.  The doctors said that the cancer cells are filled with some kind of gas that is causing the cancer cell to die.  Her liver functions normalized, indicating she was on her way to recovery.

Another testimonial came from a man who was in a lot of pain, almost paralyzed, couldn’t use his arms or raise them above his chest, couldn’t sleep or function properly.  He went to a lot of specialists who could not help him and as a last resort, he decided to take  Lunasin capsules twice a day.  After just a couple of weeks, he is now almost completely out of pain,  sleeps well,  can raise his arms,  even cleans his floors, and functions normally.

One does not have to be sick to take Lunasin capsules.  I am thinking of taking it to boost my immune system, and increase my  energy level so I can exercise longer.  My gym trainer wants to train me for two hours, but after one-and-a-half hours, I feel tired and I don’t like that feeling.  I would like to improve my stamina and train longer.  Perhaps Lunasin will do that for me.  Dr. Galvez said it is not an impossibility, based on numerous testimonials claiming renewed vim, vigor, and vitality after taking Lunasin capsules.
