Golf gets back to the fore

REAL SPORTS SCENE - Anthony Suntay - The Philippine Star

The golf boom is back!

In the past years, I have noticed that there have been less tournaments staged by big corporations or groups looking to raise funds for their respective causes.

But lately, the trend seems to be going the other way.

The recent Meister Golf Classic 2013 was further proof of the rise in interest.

There were more than 150 golfers who trooped to the Wack-Wack Golf and Country Club the other week, with the waiting list including about another 30.

It seemed like just about everyone wanted to join this tournament, and why not?

No one considered the entry fee pricey at P7,500 because it included a Meister watch which was valued at P10,000!

Now that’s a steal!

You got a great round of golf, you could join the fellowship and merry making at the awarding ceremony, and you also had the chance to win fantastic raffle prizes! The Meister watch was actually just a bonus.

There were lots of valuable items raffled off, like numerous appliances, the highlight of which was the huge Devant LCD TV. There was a handful of high-end Meister watches as well, but everyone, myself included, was eyeing the exclusive Lebron James Edition, which was the jewel of them all. There were only 150 made worldwide.

The Meister Cup was for the benefit of World Vision and Asia America Initiative, two groups that help improve the plight of children. It was supported by Fox International Channels, Nice Day Coffee, Vita Max C, Glutamax, Air Asia, ZestAir, Glutamax Slim, Ocean Potion, Ysa, 3D, Mizuno, Samsonite, Jack Nicklaus, Hugo Boss, Givenchy, Mediapool, RizGolf, Jack Daniel’s, MegaFiber, Cocoons, Impact Golf, Suriya Spa, Travelon, Alveo, Skylab, GlobalPort, Devant, Coppertone, Hanabishi, Freshman, The Bellevue, R33, Tefal, x-1R, Real Sports, One Cypress, NAko, URBN, SpeedMaster, Holchem, Project PhotoStudio, Microtel by Wyndham with hole-in-one partners Beyond Borders, 10-10-10, The Turf Company, and Glass Concepts.

Honestly, this had to be one of the better-supported tournaments I have ever participated in, and this clearly shows that there are a lot of people still eager to support worthy endeavors.

This also augers well for the renaissance of golf in the country.
