MANILA, Philippines - Water is such a precious necessity for mankind, but in some areas of the world, drinking water can be very hard to find.  Even in a water-rich country like the Philippines, far-flung areas that are even near water bodies can still be deprived of clean drinking water that every human needs.  Also, disasters including earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods often result in limited or compromised access to water systems.

LifeStraw is an elegantly simple but technologically advanced innovation. The filtering tube measures about nine inches long and one inch in diameter, and weighs less than two ounces. The filter is made of durable plastic, is chemical-free (and BPA-free), and does not require electrical power, batteries or replacement parts; it is powered by user-generated suction. When used properly, each LifeStraw will filter at least 700 liters (185 gallons) of water.
