Toys 'R' Us Rubik's championships set in Hong Kong
MANILA, Philippines - Toys ’R’ Us Philippines’ 2nd Rubik’s Speed Challenge championships were held last August 27 at the Activity Area of the TriNoma Mall in Quezon City.
At stake were prize gadgets, medals, and bragging rights as the Philippine representative to the upcoming Asian Rubik’s Championship in Hong Kong on October 5 to 7.
To make things even more interesting for speedcubers, Toys ’R’ Us is also introducing two new special challenges this year — the One-hand Challenge Tandem and Rubiks Team Relay.
For the One Hand Tandem category, each Rubik’s player will have to choose a partner and solve their 3x3x3 cube via one hand — at the same time. If the pair fails to finish simultaneously, the time of the slower player will be the one recorded.
In the Rubik’s team relay, each team will be composed of three players, and each member will be assigned to solve either a 3x3x3, 4x4x4 or 5x5x5 cube. A player cannot begin unless the cube of the previous teammate is completed.
Those with the fastest times will be declared the winner.
This year’s grand champion will bring home a Nintendo DS, a Rubik’s medal and certificate, and an all-expense-paid trip to Hong Kong for two (includes airfare, accommodations, and pocket money). The second prize winner will win a Pavizio Tablet and Rubik’s medal and certificate, while the third place winner gets a Samsung Galaxy Pocket and Rubik’s medal and certificate.
The event, however, is not just for Rubik’s solvers as Toys “R” Us has also prepared several other speed challenges as well as a Gundam Caravan for fans of the toy and animated series.
Last year, the side events included a Yoyo exhibition from members of Flipspin, an extreme yo-yoing community in the Philippines. They used various Duncan yoyos such as Imperial yoyo, Pro fly yoyo, Pro yoyo, Mosquito yoyo, etc. which are carried by Toys “R” Us.
Another crowd drawer was the Speedstacks game. Players during the Toys “ R” Us event demonstrated their hand-eye coordination, agility, and ambidexterity as they completed the 3-3-3, 3-6-3, and Cycle challenges of the Speed stacks. Some first-timers also got easily acquainted with stacking because it’s fun and easy to learn.
For those who want to try out and practice their skills at home, all the toys featured in the event are available at Toys “R” Us stores.
