The cold truth about pure ice
Manila, Philippines - Many health- and safety-conscious urbanites drink only filtered or bottled water. But often, their precautions are negated because they set less stringent standards for the water they consume in its frozen state — ice.
Studies in both the US and the Philippines have shown that the ice served in fast-food outlets, convenience stores, and other public areas may be contaminated with microbes because of improper handling. The most famous of these studies was done by a 12-year-old who collected ice samples from five South Florida restaurants, had them tested, and found that several samples tested positive for E. coli bacteria, which come from human waste.
In the Philippines, Polytrade Sales and Services Inc. president and CEO Joy Tamayo seeks to raise public awareness for the need for food-grade ice or ice that is manufactured to meet strict quality and safety standards. Polytrade manufactures Pure Ice, the only ice product in the Philippines that follows the stringent manufacturing standards set by the International Packaged Ice Association (IPIA), a non-profit trade association.
