How to get that healthy holiday glow

MANILA, Philippines - English food writer and journalist Nigella Lawson once said, “What makes people more youthful is the quality of their skin, and I don’t think you can change that.” True enough, the glow of healthy, happy skin can say a lot about a person’s general disposition and well-being.

Leading health institution Makati Medical Center, through the chair of the Department of Dermatology Dr. Peachy Paz-Lao, enumerates the three basic steps to achieving great skin.

First, personalize your daily skincare regimen and stick to it. “Tailor-fit your regimen to your skin type  oily, dry, sensitive or combination (oily to normal) skin  and use the appropriate products that would suit it,” she advises. “Also, steer clear of harmful chemicals that may be too harsh for you. Products with colors or fragrances can irritate the skin.”

The second step, says Dr. Lao, is maintenance. “Know your facial care do’s and don’ts, as these are day-to-day skin principles to live by in order to keep your skin healthy.”

For example, she points out, it is best to avoid frequent bathing which can strip your skin of its natural moisture. Use proper cosmeceuticals as advised by your dermatologist. The best way to keep your skin nourished is to keep it clean.

She throws in other useful maintenance tips: “Keep away from the sun at its peak (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) to avoid the harmful rays that can cause wrinkles, pigments, and cancer. As for makeup, improper cleansing can leave residue on your face and may cause the formation of pimples and blackheads.”

Finally, the third vital component of skincare is the combination of proper diet and exercise. “Drinking lots of water, exercising, and eating balanced meals nourish both your general health and your skin,” Dr. Lao says. “Water flushes out the toxins, while fruits and vegetables will help boost your overall nutrition. On the other hand, empty calories, such as carbohydrates and fast foods, can trigger acne.”

And because the skin is a reflection of the overall condition of mind and body, Dr. Lao encourages individuals to take time to relax and unwind. Avoiding pressure and stress can add to overall well-being of the skin.

Dr. Lao wraps up her skincare primer with a timely reminder. “Never take your skin for granted. Remember that it’s the outermost layer of your body, so it is usually the first to be affected by outside elements. The simple application of these three skincare components will go a long way in ensuring that your skin stays in tiptop shape all-year round.”
