And now, breast/thyroid ultrasound elastography
MANILA, Philippines - Current progress in the ultrasound treatment is the newly innovated elastography procedure which detects even the smallest nodule or lumps for more accurate diagnosis if the tumor is benign or malignant.
This advanced medical technology to prevent and/or gradually cure the two most dangerous cancers breast cancer that occurs 99 percent in women and only one percent in men, and thyroid cancer occurring in both men and women.
Research shows that there are various thyroid diseases that might lead to cancer. On the other hand, abnormal cells developing in the breast tissue might lead to cancer. However, these two dilemmas can be prevented or cured eventually if diagnosed in their earliest stages of infection.
Thus, ultrasound elastography is performed to confirm the presence of a nodule or lumps, and assesses the status of the infected parts. During the treatment, if a nodule or lump is spotted, it can be regarded as tumor.
In the recently concluded 9th Annual Convention on Ultrasound, organized by the Philippine Society of Ultrasound in Clinical Medicine, Inc. under course director for ultrasound workshop Dr. Dorita Evangelista and Dr. Rodney Fernan, two of the discussions focused on the clinical applications for both breast and thyroid cancers.
Hands-on workshop and lecture on thyroid ultrasound elastography were presented by Dr. Nobuhiro Fukunari of the Department of Surgery, Showa University School of Medicine while breast ultrasound elastography was tackled by Dr. Jocelyn Cuyos, head of the breast imaging section, Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center. Taking center stage was the Hitachi Avius, a top-of-the-line breast and thyroid imaging device exclusively distributed by Himex Corporation, a leading healthcare provider for the past 21 years now.
In the Philippines, elastography is a pioneer technology of Hitachi Medical Corporation. Its Avius is the state-of-the-art digital ultrasound scanner that has real-time tissue elastography.
Breast and thyroid ultrasound elastography procedures are currently available at Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center. Breast ultrasound elastography is also available at Capitol Medical Center, Southern Philippines Medical Center, Koronadal Diagnostic Center, and San Ignacio De Fundacion De Salud, Inc.
