MANILA, Philippines - A 62-year-old man was suffering from left lower back pain, buttock, and leg pain for three to four months. He complained of cramping pain and numbness from his left buttock down to his left calf. His MRI revealed slipped discs in addition to lumbar spondylosis.
“Even standing to wait for the elevator was so painful, he had to bend over,” Dr. Anton Cancio recalls a patient telling him.
He was an avid badminton player who had to give up his sport because of his condition. Prior to seeing Cancio, he was scheduled for an orthopedic consult to discuss possible surgery.
“We were able to avoid surgery after about six to eight weeks of chiropractic treatments and flexion-distraction therapy,” says Cancio. “He is back to playing badminton, free of pain, and is now a happy camper, with surgery out of the question.”
Cancio Chiropractic offers two types of traction therapies for the treatment of slipped discs flexion-distraction table and advanced decompression table.
In another case, a 59-year-old woman complained of shoulder, upper back, and neck pains. She also complained of frequent headaches. After a few weeks of chiropractic treatments, her neck pain, headaches, and back pain were gone.
“She had residual shoulder muscle pain that continued to bother her from time to time,” explains Cancio. “We added myotherapy to her program, and after a few myotherapy sessions, she was relieved of her shoulder pains.”
Myotherapy is the treatment of muscle dysfunction. It is a hands-on approach to specifically isolate and treat muscle trigger points or nodules and scarred muscle tissue, which cause muscle pains and stiffness. Myotherapy works best with chiropractic treatment.
There is also the case of a 46-year-old woman who was diagnosed with right shoulder rotator cuff tendonitis and right-sided neck pain for two weeks.
Her treatments consisted of a combination of chiropractic spinal alignment, therapy and rehabilitative shoulder exercises, and kinesio tape application.
Kinesio tape is an elastic tape developed by a Japanese chiropractor in the ’70s, Dr. Kenzo Kase. The tape provides stability and support to injured muscles, ligaments, and joints to allow faster healing without constricting blood circulation and restricting joint motion.
Dr. Cancio’s treatments emphasize functionality. “My treatment goal is to improve overall function for the patient by increasing mobility and removing pain without the use of drugs and surgery,” he says. “For chronic pain patients, treatment comes down to helping them enjoy their activities and not letting their injuries stop them from doing what they love to do. At Cancio Chiropractic, we treat the underlying cause of the problem and not just the pain symptom itself.”
Dr. Anton Cancio is a chiropractor licensed by the National and California Board of Chiropractic Examiners in the United States, and the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians.
