What keeps Karylle and Derek fit?
Although it’s not the easiest thing to do, we all aim towards being MVPs in our respective fields. The phrase “most valuable player” is commonly used in a sports context, but it also works on a more general level, on a much wider playing field. Outside of sports, there is no formal awarding body that acknowledges this kind of achievement; but anyone who works hard and puts in the hours is a surefire candidate for MVP honors.
But certain factors can get in the way of that title. Just like in sports where injuries, player attitudes, differences between coaches and teammates, and overall production and performance may affect your position in the running, other things can get in the way, too. We all will have moments of weakness, and this is perfectly normal. But it is by addressing that which gives us difficulty and moving forward that makes one a true MVP.
Generally, the cause of all of our troubles is stress. It is what keeps us up late to beat deadlines. Because of this, we only get to sleep for a minimum amount of time, which makes us cranky the next day. At work, we are sleepy and unable to finish the day’s set tasks. This leads us up to the point where we find ourselves working after hours, beating deadlines. The vicious cycle has started all over again, and stress is the culprit.
There is no way to eradicate stress as it is a normal part of human existence. But there are ways to avoid it. And the best way to do so is by living a balanced lifestyle. This so-called “balanced lifestyle” is not a dream, and it can be achieved by anyone. Ask pop sensation/artist Karylle and sports star Derek Ramsay — they’ll tell you it isn’t easy, but it isn’t impossible.
As the newest endorsers of Pharmaton, Karylle and Derek show how it is to unleash your true potential. They remain dedicated to their respective craft, while continuing to be performers and inspiring individuals. As young, successful personalities, they represent what it truly means to lead a balanced life, and are deserving of the MVP mantle.
“I always make time to relax. I like that I am able to do a lot of things, but I don’t think I would have my career if I didn’t work hard and know how to unwind just the same,” says Karylle.
We all know her to be part of a prominent showbiz clan, and that she is usually under the heavy glare of the limelight. But Karylle also makes time for other endeavors. When she is not taping, she is part owner of a popular resto-bar, and satisfies her more artistic whims, which include writing songs and writing for the entertainment section of a popular broadsheet and a showbiz magazine.
“I am so blessed with my career and the love I get from everyone. It’s only proper to pay it forward,” Karylle says.
Derek, on the other hand, is a true-blooded sports guy, who aims to prove his value on the court. A member of the Philippine National Frisbee Team, he has seen action in and out of the country. He was named Most Valuable Player during the Asian Championship in Bali, the Boracay Championship, and the Manila Championship, all in 2008, as well in the Asian Championship in Taiwan in 2007.
“I simply love the adrenalin rush that goes with the sport,” says Derek. “But more than the physical exertion, what really drives me is the mental preparation that goes with the whole thing. As soon as you set foot in the field, you have to believe that you’re the best man out there, no matter what.”
But even with their busy schedules, Karylle and Derek make time to venture into charitable work. Karylle has spearheaded clink.ph, which stands for Charitable Link, a website that serves as a directory of charitable institutions where people can make donations to their charity of choice. Derek, on the other hand, is truly a softie especially when it comes to the disadvantaged, particularly children. He currently supports a number of charitable institutions including World Vision, which helps Filipino children and their families overcome poverty; the 8000 Foundation; Kalinga Foundation, which provides education to the children in Payatas; and Alabang Elementary School.
Pharmaton couldn’t have chosen two more deserving MVP candidates. These young people embody living life to the fullest by working hard, giving back to the community, and maintaining a balanced and positive outlook. Again, it’s not easy, but the rewards are well worth it.
