And now, painless breast exam for women

-

MANILA, Philippines – Records show that mammography remains the most widely used imaging tool for the early detection of breast abnormalities, but a number of other imaging modalities are currently being developed. Ultrasound is an excellent add-on to mammography with its capability to identify solid and cystic abnormalities.

The latest development in breast ultrasound, elastography significantly enhances the ability of ultrasound to distinguish benign from malignant nodules (a small protruding lump). More, elastography can significantly lower the incidence of unnecessary biopsy of benign lesions.

Early detection of breast cancer can greatly affect the outcome of clinical management. The role of imaging will continue to evolve as the imaging techniques improve, with the common goal of making an early detection of breast cancer with the end result of improving the outcome in those who have breast cancer and avoiding unnecessary procedures in those who do not have the disease.

Himex Corp., now in its 20 years of being the sole distributor of Hitachi high-technology medical equipment, unveils its latest ultrasound elastography, EUB Preirus.

There is likely to be a trend towards multi-modality imaging systems that combine anatomic with physiologic information. In places with limited resources where multimodality imaging may not be feasible, real-time elastography may provide cost-effective breast cancer screening and diagnostics.
