Hear this: A book on hearing loss now at NBS

MANILA, Philippines – There are an estimated 9.6 million people in the Philippines suffering from some form of hearing impairment. Most are left undiagnosed, ignored or rejected and untreated. As a result, many became socially withdrawn, isolated, and misunderstood by family members and friends. Many suffer silently and alone, slowly losing their self-esteem and confidence to face the challenges in life.

What is hearing loss? Who is likely to be at risk? How did it happen? Can my hearing loss be passed to my children? Why is my child not hearing? Is there a cure? Where can I seek help?

Who better to answer these questions than Hearing Loss book author Voltaire Ungui, who himself wears cochlear implants on both ears. Voltaire’s hearing loss began when he was in grade school. Undeterred by his handicap, he is determined to help those who are like him.

He graduated with a master of audiology from the University of the Philippines, and has been a practicing audiologist locally and overseas with many years of clinical experience working with the deaf and hearing impaired.

In this book, Voltaire attempts to address the common causes and myths associated with hearing loss. Can loud music damage my hearing? Can my broken eardrums be repaired? Will I go deaf eventually? Can hearing aids really help? Should I go for a cochlear implant? And many more questions that you need to know but were too afraid to ask.

Voltaire has painstakingly removed the technicality of hearing loss by putting it in layman’s terms to help readers understand better. The book provides information which aims to help remove the stigma, fear, and misconceptions about hearing impairment and its possible treatments.

This book is a must-read for the general public, students, people who are at risk, hearing care professionals, and those who are already suffering from hearing impairments or parents of children who are hearing-impaired.

Hearing Loss by Voltaire Ungui is now available at National Book Store.
