Going green and health-tea

- Jennifer Ong -
The sight of it brings comfort. The smell and taste, bliss. Tea is truly a sensual pleasure. It is one of few beverages that grows graceful with age. Indeed, tea is a legacy of the past and an icon of the present. One can only guess how it will transform itself into a future trend.

The possibility is clearly there. Reports claim that the raging heat wave of St. Louis had something to do with it. Back in 1904, Richard Blechynden decided to drop some ice cubes into his hot tea. Thus, the first iced tea came to be. And this mixture improved over time.

In the 1940s, iced tea took the world market by storm when Nestle decided to come out with its own iced tea brand, Nestea. Since then, Nestea has become a household name that can only mean great-tasting, refreshing, and healthy iced teas people can’t seem to get enough of. Fact is, it has managed to grab a whopping 50 percent of the global market!

Yep, Nestea’s definitely doing something right and now, it’s ready to help everyone live right as well. Iced tea gets healthier – and green, too!

Green Iced Tea is the latest member of the ever-growing Nestea iced tea family. The reason is simple: Green tea is good for every- body. For centuries, the health benefits of green tea have been studied and reported. Based on these findings, there are a great number of reasons why one should start including green tea in his daily diet.

There is nothing more revitalizing than a cup of green tea taken first thing in the morning to start the day right. Green tea contains a significant amount of caffeine that, when taken in the proper amount, can stimulate the nervous system and skeletal muscles. In short, it can energize both body and soul.

Taking green tea every day helps keep one’s health in check. This is because green tea contains flavanoids, catechins, and fluoride. Flavanoids are mainly plant pigments found in both fruits and vegetables. Reportedly, it aids in processing vitamin C in the body as well as in maintaining the capillary walls. More, flavanoids are known to help protect the body from infection.

On the other hand, catechins are a kind of polyphenols, three of which are said to be significantly present in green tea. These are epicatechin (EC), epigallocatechin (EGC), and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Among these, EGCG is reportedly the most prized. This particular catechin is believed to be capable of an antioxidant activity, 25 to100 times more powerful than vitamin C or E.

The fluoride in green tea helps strengthen one’s teeth while fighting cavities at the same time. Green tea’s contribution to oral health goes further through the bacteria-fighting catechins that can help prevent bad breath.

Certain serious illnesses can also be prevented or cured by drinking green tea. As a rich source of antioxidants, green tea helps prevent cancer and heart disease. Green tea can also help keep one’s cholesterol level in check.

Green tea is said to help ease or prevent osteoarthritis. And a study conducted by Dr. Nakane and Dr. Ono of the Aichi Cancer Institute revealed that this beverage just might be powerful enough to put a stop to the AIDS virus activity in one’s body.
