New, non-sedating anti-allergy is friendly too

-
A new and non-sedating antihistamine, fexofenadine (Teslfast), doesn't interfere with the lifestyle of individuals compared to earlier drugs is now being marketed in the Philippines by Aventis Pharma.

This was revealed in a lecture conducted by Prof. Ian Hindmarch, MD, during the launching of fexofenadine, the only third generation antihistamine available in the market, and attended by an audience composed of allergists, specialists, internal medicines-pulmonologists and family medicine/ general practitioners from all over the country.

Dr. Hindmarch, head of HPRU Medical Research Center of the University of the Surrey in the United Kingdom, said that fexofenadine doesn't alter an individual patient's level of alertness and directly or indirectly impair cognitive and psychomotor performance.

The lecture highlighted the sedative effects of antihistamines and emphasized the need for third-generation drugs like fexofenadine in the effective treatment of allergic conditions, including seasonal and perennial rhinitis, urticaria and dermatological cases that led to the development of drugs with potent antihistamine activity.

US records show that three percent of patients involved in fatal road accidents had previously taken antihistamines and later found guilty in 72 percent of cases decided in court compared with 86 percent in accident victims using alcohol.

Furthermore, the impact of sedation caused by antihistamine on safe performance of daily activities is an important aspect when deciding which antihistamine should be prescribed to ambulant patients with allergies and dermatological conditions, according to Dr. Hindmarch.

At the same time, Dr. Hindmarch told his audience that this is the first time that an emerging innovation on antihistamines ever happened in the country because of the advent of fexofenadine leading to a major advance in the safe and efficacious day-to-day management of ambulant patients with allergic conditions.

Sedation refers to the effects of antihistamines on cognition, memory, psychomotor function and information processing tasks which form the basis of all human activities and functions at home, on the road or at work or, in short, in an individual's lifestyle.

Fexofenadine is, therefore, expected to offer the therapeutic efficacy of the first-and-second-generation drugs with improved pharmacokinetics and metabolism that avoids the side effects associated with the parent compound and other metabolics.
