Yahoo Messenger bids goodbye
MANILA, Philippines — Remember the time you asked for NASL to a complete stranger online or hit the buzz button because you were too excited to share a story to a friend who did not reply in the chat room?
After 20 years, the iconic Yahoo Messenger bids its goodbye to its millions of users, leaving them nostalgic on how the communication service connected them from afar.
“We know we have many loyal fans who have used Yahoo Messenger since its beginning as one of the first chat apps of its kind. As the communications landscape continues to change over, we're focusing on building and introducing new, exciting communications tools that better fit consumer needs,” Yahoo explains the shutdown on its website.
Users of the iconic communication service expressed in social media their feelings for the demise of Yahoo Messenger.
“Thank you for the memories, #YahooMessenger. You were a great part of my teenage years,” @noiknows posted on Twitter.
“RIP #YahooMessenger It's sad to say farewell but just reflecting back on that special time in my life will always make me smile. there was nothing like it. da best! thank you for years of great memories I'll cherish forever. x_skitzo_kitty *signing out* 1 last time...” user @metalmoonflower wrote.
“It was built in the era where there was no skype, whatsapp etc and to me #yahoomessenger is a classic story of a product that could have been scaled up to much more than it was yet it died its own death!” @lilangel_moi shared on Twitter.
“As #yahoomessenger bids it’s final goodbye, let me take a look back at our memories together (video chatting) using this app. This used to be our bridge to cross distance between our ??’s. And now it waving its last goodbye,” @claribel_delearth wrote.
YM's shut down coincided with World Emoji Day on July 17. YM has been among the first apps to introduce and maximize the use of emojis.
Nonetheless, Yahoo announced that the “Yahoo ID will continue to work for other Yahoo products, like Yahoo Mail, Yahoo Fantasy, etc.”
The search engine site is constantly experimenting with new services and apps, including a new group messaging app called Yahoo Squirrel.
