A Galaxy of earthly delights

- Igan D’Bayan -

MANILA, Philippines- As you read this, I might be flying in from somewhere. Clouds on the plane’s tongue, blue everywhere. But long flights can be purgatorial. Especially if your inflight entertainment consists of three Kevin Costner movies and a Jennifer Aniston rom-com — with Costner in it (

Rumor Has It

). And you forgot to take out your Will Self book from your check-in luggage. Anyway, when you have one of those tablets, you can do a host of things that doesn’t involve Jennifer Aniston.

Samsung has one. Launched last September, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3G — a phone, a laptop and so much more — has redefined life on-the-go in our age. People can salivate over 100,000 free Android apps, view videos in full HD (convert your Takashi Miike or Guillermo del Toro flicks and get a brainy film festival going wherever you are), to editing PowerPoint (some of us have to work even while 30,000 feet above the China Sea), to reading e-books (finish those Tolstoy books you always brag about) — thus, it’s a brilliant tool for work and play.

Jowee Alviar and Mon Punzalan, owners of Team Manila and Samsung Galaxy Tab ambassadors: “We’re keen on using the Galaxy Tab in sharing information about Team Manila online. There are also many graphic design apps in the Android market, which we hope we could utilize in the near future.”

At the brand’s recent “Life 2.0” press launch, Samsung head of corporate marketing Chiqui Tan admits she’s in a relationship with her Galaxy Tab. “For a multi-tasking corporate mom like me, the Galaxy Tab takes me to my 2.0 self. (This device) has changed the way we conduct our lives. (Not just in terms of) creativity, but with so much, much more.”

Samsung product manager Stephanie Chua discusses what a person could do with this amazing tablet: the Samsung Galaxy Tab Wi-Fi, launched early this year.

“You could access your e-mail, update your Facebook… You could communicate with it not just through phone calls or SMS; you could make conversation more personal and (make way) for a more intense bonding experience.”

Carlos Celdran, founder of Walk This Way: “My favorite thing about the Galaxy Tab is that it’s sturdy. It’s not delicate. And it is strong enough to withstand all the hits and bangs of my lifestyle.”

Consider the specs:

As combo of a mini-PC, media player, and e-reader, the Samsung Galaxy Tab is a powerful entertainment device and business tool. Features include a fast processor, a seven-inch touch-screen for mobile computing, watching videos, and browsing the Internet, two cameras, video chat capabilities, and flexible access to the Internet with 3G or Wi-Fi versions. The Samsung Galaxy Tab features a seven-inch TFT LCD touch-screen made with scratch- and impact-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass. The stunning 1024 x 600 WSVGA resolution is complemented by greater pixel density, providing a more comfortable reading experience, whether browsing NBA.com or scrolling through your latest e-book.

So, Samsung recruit several brand ambassadors whose lives have been upgraded, enhanced and made more damn exciting. According to brand executives, “These individuals — from the fields of fashion to business, art to philanthropy, and more — have tapped into the power of Samsung Galaxy Tab technology to access knowledge, improve skill, and connect with peers or reach audiences much better and faster.”

Time to switch off Costner now and have an appointment with my 2.0 self.
