The modern man’s guide to this season’s fashion hits

GO-SEE - Joyce Oreña - The Philippine Star

The season’s hit list is out.?An exciting revolt is sweeping through men’s fashion. You will see sportswear-meets-sharp suit get-ups, rad color combinations only for the brave at heart, traditionally feminine prints like florals adorn ensembles and mix-and-match prints turn up everywhere.?A color revolution is happening this fall/winter season in men’s fashion.?The modern man is not afraid of color. Just take a look at the season’s fashion show at Lanvin, Yohji Yamamoto, Issey Miyake, Bottega Veneta, Prada, Raf Simons, Dries Van Noten, and Burberry Prorsum. You will find a kaleidoscope of color from sunny yellow to daring orange, wild green, powerful purple, bold blue, dynamic red, deep indigo and wintry pastels.

A MAN IN COLOR IS FRESH AND FORWARD

Pantone, the global authority on color for more than 20 years, features the most prominent hues for fall 2014.  A unisex color palette has become a definitive trend in recent seasons and this fall 2014 is no exception. You will see an exotic red (Sangria) and part of the cool-blue spectrum of reds (Aurora Red) paired with browns like Cognac. Misted yellow also looks good with Cognac. Pantone’s colors of the year Radiant Orchid and Cobalt Blue are color statements of the season — prevalent everywhere from sportswear to day and night suits, shoes and other men’s accessories. Combine Royal Blue and Cypress Green with a modern silvery shade, Aluminum. These are staple hues for outerwear and formalwear.

For the even braver set, experiment with unexpected color combinations. Try out these rad combos in shades of browns and grays with orchid and lime, blue and bright pink or neon green, red with deep and hot pink, or orange with purple and army green. The adventure starts now.

SHOW YOUR TRUE COLORS

Not ready for that color adventure? Start with your arm swag. Add a dash of color with a Swatch. Get that color explosion from the Swatch A World in Colors Collection. These playful watches inspired by seemingly every shade of the rainbow are meant for men who work hard and play even harder. Take your pick from designs that are abstract, bold and trendy yet sophisticated — like the Swatch New Gent Color Explosion, Color My Lacquered and Color Palette. There are also fun and funky color combinations in the Swatch Classic Collection for fall 2014 like the Swatch Chrono Plastic Testa Di Toro, Speed Up and Purple Power, and the Swatch Big Classic New Beach.

Brown hues made the hit list, too. They are essential to the season’s basics. Then there’s the muted color palette of camel, caramel, charcoal and slate. Check out the browns at Louis Vuitton, Etro, Gucci, Carven, Rick Owens, Neil Barrett and Calvin Klein.

The Swatch Classic Collection in Swatch Irony Chrono Brushed Earth, Swatch Big Classic Sand Storm III and Special Unit and Swatch Irony Chrono Alec are key players of this fall trend.

The Swatch Classic Collection for fall is for the suave yet rugged gentleman. It’s about a classic sense of style with a modern edge. They match perfectly with the season, smart casual, modern classic and contemporary sportswear.

BE READY FOR AN ADVENTURE ANY TIME OF DAY

Basic blue is essential to a man’s wardrobe staple. This season, new takes on sharp indigos at Jil Sander, Salvatore Ferragamo, DSquared2, Ralph Lauren, Maison Martin Margiela, Kenzo, A.P.C. and Giorgio Armani are season hits. The latest blues also made a hit at Swatch with the Swatch Irony Chrono Dr. Swatson, Blue Win and Sprinkled Water.

Men’s fashion and its constant love affair with checks — from tweed, to plaid, Tartin and Prince of Wales — are seen at Etro, Ermenegildo Zegna, Alexander McQueen, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Ralph Lauren and Junya Watanabe. Even Swatch can’t resist the love for the pattern with the Swatch New Gent McPattern, Color-Kilt and For the Love of W from the Swatch High-lands Mix Collection.

The other patterns that swirl before your eyes from the Swatch High-Lands Mix Collection deliver the right swag for the season.

Black is always a usual suspect in every season but this time, the new black is paired with brave colors of red, orange, yellow, purple and green. Take a look at Swatch’s New Gent Gaet and Big Classic Carbonata. They’re season hits.

The color combo also made its mark at the shows of Y3, Versace, No.21, Dolce & Gabbana, Saint Laurent and Opening Ceremony.

Men’s fashion this season combines sporty and smart. A modern take on the conservative day suit is a hit this season. Wear it with a rocker’s attitude. Get lessons on layering. Layer a shirt on top of a jacket on top of a sweater on top of another jacket wrapped with an oversized scarf. You will also see knee-length shorts worn over turned-up trousers. Then, the classic day suit takes on a modern edge. Skinny stovepipe trousers are back. Wear them cropped around the ankle and paired with bigger, bulkier layers on top. Think Beatles circa 1964. The way forward this season includes check suits, camouflage and bomber jackets.

The modern man no longer settles for traditional gender-style stereotypes. He is no longer afraid to experiment with style.

Go and get extra street cred. Check out the latest hit list. Wear it for fun and because you can.
